St. Andrews Downs Pfeiffer in Deep South First Round

LAURINBURG, N.C. - St. Andrews Presbyterian College senior Keith Belward tallied five goals and one assist to lead the fourth-seeded Knights in a 13-5 victory over fifth-seeded Pfeiffer University in first round action of the Deep South Conference Men's Lacrosse Tournament Tuesday.

Pfeiffer (2-10) registered the first goal of the afternoon when Nathan Young scored on a pass from Brian Cubbage at the 13:16 mark, but an unassisted goal from Belward would tie the game at 1-1 in the first frame.

Belward fired in another shot on a pass from Pat Haley just 34 seconds into the second period, and St. Andrews (4-8) would not trail again in the contest, expanding the lead to 5-1 before Pfeiffer added another tally. The Falcons cut the margin to 6-3 by halftime but would get no closer.

The Knights recorded five goals in the third period and two in the fourth. Pfeiffer scored once in each quarter.

Haley finished with three assists and 10 ground balls while winning 11 of 15 face-offs for St. Andrews. Brendon Burke scored twice in the outing. Jimmy Herberson contributed one goal and two assists with Zach Mryncza adding a goal and one assist. Chris Hewlett, Peter Gut, Kris Hartzell, and Chris Stott also scored for the Knights. Hartzell collected eight ground balls and Matt Sochacki seven.

Young led Pfeiffer with two goals. Cubbage, Ryan Cox, and Trevor Krauss each scored once.

Kevin Woods made nine saves for St. Andrews. Trevor Smith accumulated 14 for Pfeiffer.

St. Andrews will face top-seeded Limestone Friday at 1 p.m. in semifinal action at Wingate. Second-seeded Wingate will take on third-seeded Catawba at 4 p.m. in the other semifinal match-up. Wingate defeated Mars Hill 21-7, and Catawba topped Lees-McRae 17-2 in other first round play today.
