Saint Andrews vs. Wingate

The Game Story:
LAURINBURG, N.C. - Wingate University built on a six-goal second quarter to defeat St. Andrews Presbyterian College 16-6 in a Deep South Conference men's lacrosse match-up Wednesday afternoon.

St. Andrews (2-7, 2-3 in DSC) opened the game with a pair of goals from Zach Mryncza and Chris Hewlett, but Wingate (5-5, 4-1 in DSC) would break into the scoring column with a tally from Bryan Safarik to trail 2-1 at the end of the first period.

Bulldog Steve Maxwell quickly evened the score in the second quarter with a goal at the 14:21 mark, and twenty seconds later Wingate would take its first lead of the game when Ian Hill scored on a pass from Maxwell. The Bulldogs would expand their lead to 8-3 by halftime.

Maxwell would get three more of his seven points in the third period by contributing a goal and two assists with Wingate scoring five goals in the quarter and four in the final frame.

St. Andrews added a single tally in the third quarter and two in the fourth. Keith Belward scored twice in the second half and earned an assist on the Knights' other goal.

Belward finished with two goals and two assists to lead St. Andrews. Brendon Burke recorded one goal and one assist while Hewlett added an assist to his goal. Pat Haley had one goal, and Steve Guarini also had an assist.

Maxwell tallied three goals and four assists in the outing while Hill scored three times with one assist. Safarik also recorded a hat trick. Lamar Morton and Sean McElroy each added two goals, and Drew Penny had two assists.

Kevin Woods made eight saves for the Knights, and Sean Jaramillo had two. Jon Klish collected six saves for the Bulldogs while Jonathan Cofer had two.

St. Andrews will take on non-conference opponent Adelphi at Chesapeake High School Saturday at 2 p.m.
