|COLCHESTER, Vt. - The Saint Michael's College men's lacrosse team (6-6, 4-4 Northeast-10 Conference) never trailed in earning a 9-7 win versus Saint Anselm College in league action on Wednesday on Duffy Field at Doc Jacobs Complex.|
With the win, Saint Michael's moves closer to earning a home contest in the NE-10 Quarterfinals. The Purple Knights would clinch the fourth seed in the playoffs, and a home postseason game, with a home win on Saturday in their regular-season finale versus Assumption College, plus one loss by Southern New Hampshire University in its final two games.
For Saint Michael's, junior James Baghai (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley) and freshman Sean Leahy (Grainger, Ind./Saint Joseph's) led a balanced scoring attack with two goals and an assist apiece. Junior Charlie Niznansky (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield-Ludlowe) also scored two goals in the win, while senior Jake Previte (Cohasset, Mass./Cohasset), junior Charles Seelinger (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa), and freshman Peter Hanson (Andover, Mass./Andover) each netted one goal. Junior Zach Jandl (Brookline, N.H./Vermont Academy) turned aside 11 shots to earn the victory.
For Saint Anselm (6-6, 4-4 NE-10), senior Matt Surette (Wakefield, Mass.) tallied two goals and an assist, while juniors Ryan McDonald (Bow, N.H.) and Jeff Dunkle (Exeter, N.H.) added two goals apiece. Senior Chris Murphy (Winchester, Mass./Winchester) also scored for the Hawks, while sophomore Dan Flynn (Wakefield, Mass.) stopped 14 shots in the setback.
Saint Michael's took the lead for good late in the first quarter, as the Purple Knights scored the final three goals of the period to take a 4-1 lead through one quarter. Saint Michael's increased its lead to 5-1 and 6-2 before the Hawks closed to within 6-4 at halftime.
Niznansky restored Saint Michael's four-goal margin with the only two goals of the third quarter, and his second goal proved to be the game-winner, as Saint Anselm rallied twice to within two goals in the final period.
Saint Anselm held a slim 37-33 advantage in shots, but the Purple Knights led 19-12 in ground balls, and won 14 of the game's 20 faceoffs.
Saint Michael's returns to action on Saturday, as the Purple Knights play their final game of the regular season, hosting league-rival Assumption College for a 3:30 p.m. Senior Day contest. Saint Anselm closes out its regular season on Friday with a 4 p.m. home game versus American International College.
