| MANCHESTER, N.H. - Sophomore Matt Surette (Wakefield, MA) scored four goals and junior Steve Trocki (Braintree, MA) added three goals and one assist to lead Saint Anselm College to a 15-13 victory over Southern New Hampshire University here tonight in Northeast-10 Conference men's lacrosse action. The Hawks improved to 4-6 overall and 2-4 in the league, while the host Penmen dropped to 3-7 overall and 3-3 in the NE-10. Saint Anselm snapped a three-game losing streak to its cross-town rival. Each of the last four games between the two teams have been decided by three goals or less. Freshman Matt O'Connell (Charlestown, MA) helped the Saint Anselm cause with a goal and four assists, while junior John Griffin (Hingham, MA) and senior Brian Hubert (Nashua, NH) both totaled two goals and two assists. Senior Joe Young (Derry, NH) led the Penmen with four goals and four assists, while junior Spencer Rennick (Peabody, MA) added two goals and one assist. The Penmen scored three unanswered goals in the first 7:45 of the first quarter, but the Hawks closed out the frame with four unanswered goals. Griffin's goal, a second before the quarter ended gave the Hawks a 4-3 lead. The teams each scored three goals in the second quarter, including a goal by Trocki with 13 seconds left in the half, and Saint Anselm took a 7-6 lead into intermission. Much like the start of the game, SNHU came out strong at the start of the second half and took a 9-8 lead following an extra-man goal by junior John Delanoy (Lansdale, PA) with 6:35 left in the quarter. But, like the first quarter, the Hawks answered with four unanswered goals in the final 5:24 of the frame and took a 12-9 lead into the fourth quarter. SNHU outscored the Hawks 3-1 over the first 8:23 of the fourth quarter, and pulled to within a goal following an unassisted effort by Young with 6:37 left. neither team scored again until Trocki netted an unassisted goal of his own with 2;56 left, and O'Connell's extra-man goal with 1:48 left gave the Hawks a 15-12 lead. SNHU's Sean Ball (Salem, NH) closed out the scoring with 46 seconds left. Both teams fired 42 shots in the game and SNHU held a slim 16-15 edge in face-offs. Senior Greg Palladino (Hingham, MA) and junior Mickey Hover (Montgomery, NJ) combined to make 11 saves in net for the Penmen. Senior Andrew Roy (Westford, MA) went the distance in net for the Hawks and stopped 13 shots, including six in the fourth quarter. Both teams return to action Saturday (4/21). SNHU travels hosts third-ranked Le Moyne College, while Saint Anselm hosts fourth-ranked Bryant University. |
