|The Game Story:|
|COLCHESTER, Vt. ? Tenth-ranked Adelphi University netted the game-winning goal with 1:40 left in regulation and held off Saint Michael's College, 11-10, in non-conference men's lacrosse action on Wednesday on Duffy Field at Doc Jacobs Complex.|
For Adelphi (5-3), senior Michael Gongas (Port Jefferson, N.Y.) recorded three goals and three assists, including the game-winning goal with 100 seconds remaining. Freshman Ian Kuchta (Norwalk, Conn.) also scored three goals, while senior Stephen Mortimer (Adelaide, Australia) added a pair of tallies. Junior Dale Pescitelli (Shoreham, N.Y.) chipped in with a goal and an assist, and freshman Devin Schneiderbauer (Pepperell, Mass) stopped eight shots in goal.
For Saint Michael's (4-4), junior Greg Lazarus (Evanston, Ill./Evanston) scored three goals, while classmate Mike Boerma (Concord, Mass./Lawrence Academy) added two goals and two assists. Junior Mark Agostinelli (Dedham, Mass./Xaverian) chipped in with a pair of goals, and sophomore Jake Previte (Cohasset, Mass./Cohasset) tallied one goal and one assist. Junior Jeff Hannon (Wilbraham, Mass./Minnechaug Regional) turned aside 11 shots in net as the Purple Knights won just three of 23 faceoffs in the contest.
The visiting Panthers led 4-1 through one quarter, and held an 8-2 advantage late in the first half. However, Saint Michael's pulled to within 8-4 at halftime on goals by Previte and sophomore Alex Paulhus (Ashland, Mass./Catholic Memorial) in the final 1:24 of the second period.
The Purple Knights carried that momentum into the third quarter, as Saint Michael's outscored Adelphi 4-1 in the period to cut their deficit to 9-8 through three quarters of play. Adelphi restored a two-goal lead early in the final period, but goals by Boerma and Lazarus midway through the stanza evened the score at 10-all. That set the stage for Gongas's heroics, and Saint Michael's couldn't score the equalizer on its final possession, turning the ball over with 10 seconds left.
Saint Michael's returns to Northeast-10 Conference play on Saturday with a 1 p.m. home game versus Southern New Hampshire University, while Adelphi hosts Molloy College on Saturday at 1 p.m. For more information on Saint Michael's men's lacrosse, visit our website at www.smcathletics.com.
