COLCHESTER, Vt. – Hawks attack Alex Vinciguerra (Canton, Mass.) potted three of the team's four goals, but the Saint Anselm College men's lacrosse team was defeated by the Purple Knights of Saint Michael's College by an 8-4 margin in the quarterfinal round of the Northeast-10 Conference men's lacrosse championship.
Saint Anselm, who entered the tournament as the fifth-seeded team, sees their season come to a close with an overall record of 8-7, having lost six straight games to end the year. The Purple Knights, seeded fourth entering tournament play, advance to play the Dolphins of Le Moyne College at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, May 4.
The Purple Knights jumped out to the early 3-0 lead as sophomore midfielder Tim McDonald and senior midfielder Max Zuccarino forced home Marty Vanzo feeds within 19 seconds of each other near the beginning of the game. Junior attack Pete Donnally struck with 3:58 remaining in the first period, scoring his 32nd goal of the season to extend their early lead. Saint Anselm midfielder Michael DeVita (Annandale, N.J.) scored first for the Hawks with 3:12 remaining in the first period, cutting into the deficit.
At 12:22 of the second period, Vinciguerra scored an unassisted goal to bring the Hawks to within one goal. Following an additional Donnally strike, Vinciguerra scored another unassisted goal with 8:40 remaining in the stanza to keep pace with the Purple Knights, who still possessed a one goal lead. Saint Michael's would score the next four goals across the next three quarters as Donnally scored his third and fourth goals of the game in addition to strikes from Evan Antolino and Zuccarini.
Vinciguerra capped off the hat trick with 6:33 remaining in the fourth quarter, but neither team scored for the remainder of the contest. The three-goal performance was the first of Vinciguerra's career in what would become his final career game.
Hawks goaltender Jonathon O'Reilly (Plano, Texas) drew the loss despite making 11 saves on 19 shots on net. Saint Michael's goaltender Chris DeMairo made 12 saves while allowing only four Saint Anselm goals in the contest.
NOTABLES: After today's defeat at the hands of the Purple Knights, the all-time postseason series between the Hawks and Saint Michael's College stands at 2-2…Senior attack Alex Vinciguerra recorded a hat trick for the first time in his career this afternoon…Midfielder Andrew Messner (Wakefield, R.I.) ends the season on a seven game point streak, scoring eight goals and seven assists for 15 points (8-7=15) and has recorded at least one point in 13-of-14 contests he has appeared in.
