Saint Vincent vs. Marywood

The Game Story:
LATROBE (Mar. 3) - Senior Will DeLanoy posted a hat trick and junior Alex Walsh scored the game-winner with 1:19 left to play as the Saint Vincent men's lacrosse team won the home opener over Marywood (Pa.), 8-7, on the SVC Turf.

With the win, the Bearcats even their record at 1-1 to start the 2012 campaign. The Pacers lose their season-opener and drop to 0-1 to start the year.

Marywood's Dante Frederico posted the first tally of the game at the 11:58-mark of the first quarter before DeLanoy registered his first score on the afternoon with 7:43 to play in the first period, 1-1. The two teams closed the first quarter of play deadlocked, 1-1.

The Pacers then rattled off four-straight goals to start the second quarter. Joe LaBella scored a man-up goal 21 seconds into the second frame and Marywood added goals at the 11:15, 9:52 and 8:37 marks to stretch the lead to four goals, 5-1.

Walsh answered with 5:30 to go in the first half with his first goal of the game to make it a 5-2 game. Just 2:20 later, senior Mike Diggs sent the Bearcats into the half down two goals, posting his first tally of the afternoon at the 3:10-mark, 5-3.

DeLanoy started the second half with a score 4:13 into the third quarter to cut the deficit to one goal, 5-4. Marywood's Marcus Janda extended the lead to 6-4 with a man-up goal with 4:04 to play in the third quarter.

Just 43 seconds into the fourth quarter, freshman Cody Golon scored his first collegiate goal (man down) on an assist from DeLanoy, cutting the margin back to one goal, 6-5. The two teams went into a defensive battle for the next seven-plus minutes before Diggs tied the game at the 6:47-mark.

With 3:40 remaining in the game, DeLanoy recorded the hat trick on a pass from Diggs to give SVC its first lead of the game, 7-6. The Pacers answered back 28 seconds later to knot the game, 7-7, on a goal by Taylor Goldson. Walsh collected the game-winner with 1:19 to play on an even-strength goal, with the assist to freshman Nick Pensyl.

Junior Adam Gunter earned the win in goal, making 10 saves in 60 minutes of action. Nicholas Cornella took the loss for Marywood, stopping 14 shots on the afternoon.

SVC held the edge in shots (36-31) and ground balls (31-28), while the Bearcats won 11 of 16 face-offs. DeLanoy led the team with six shots on goal while Walsh posted five shots on goal. Diggs finished with three SOG and senior Lou Fries and sophomore Peter Hronis each added a pair of shots on goal.

The Bearcats return to action this Wednesday, Mar. 7, with a 4 p.m. game at Christopher Newport (Va.).
