Wheeling Jesuit vs. Grand Canyon

The Game Story:
Wheeling, WV, April 1, 2011---On Friday evening, the Wheeling Jesuit lacrosse team fought-off a late fourth quarter scoring drive by Grand Canyon University for a 7-5 victory at James LaRosa Stadium. The Cardinals improved to 5-3 on the season while the ‘Lopes fell to 2-8.

Wheeling Jesuit cruised through the first three quarters, outscoring GCU 7-1 until the fourth quarter. In the final frame, GCU surged for four goals as they outshot the Cardinals 11-3. Despite the scoring outburst, Wheeling Jesuit held their ground and pulled off their fifth victory.

In the first quarter, WJU senior Colin Jack started the scoring with 10:59 showing on the clock, giving the Cardinals a 1-0 advantage. Six-and-a-half minutes later, Tyler Johnson found the back of the net which was assisted by Ricky Rano. Grand Canyon interrupted the Cardinal run with a goal by Josh Drummond with 1:38 remaining, but the Cardinals retaliated with five unanswered goals.

In the second quarter, Johnson touched the twine for a second time followed by Ed Monahan’s goal at the 7:59 mark. Four minutes later, Aaron Gutentag found Kevin Figaniak for a goal and followed in the third quater with another assist, setting up Rano’s initial score.

With a 6-1 advantage, Figaniak ripped a second shot past the ‘Lopes goalie with Landon DelPrince earning the assists.

Jim LaPenna tended the net for 54:46, earning the win and allowing only three shots to sneak past while turning down 12 shots.

The Wheeling Jesuit lacrosse team will host East Coast Conference opponent Chestnut Hill University on Sunday, April 3rd at James LaRosa Stadium. Face-off is scheduled for 11:00 a.m.
