| Wingate, N.C.----Wingate University freshman attack Chris Jans
(Fallston, Md.) had four goals and one assist, while fellow frosh attack
Wes Smith (Kent Island, Md.) added three goals and three assists as the
Bulldogs defeated Catawba College 15-9 in Deep South Conference men's
lacrosse action this afternoon at Irwin Belk Stadium and John R. Martin
Field on the Wingate campus.
Wingate is the number 10 team in the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association Division II top 10. Wingate is 7-4 overall (3-3 DSC), while Catawba falls to 5-7 overall (1-5 DSC). The Bulldogs host Mars Hill College Tuesday in the first round of the Deep South Conference tournament. Wingate bolted to a 4-0 lead and never looked back. Jans scored Wingate's first goal at the 14:25 mark on an assist from Smith. Senior midfielder Josh Needle (Elbridge, N.Y.) tallied Wingate's second goal at the 9:48 plateau, also on an assist by Smith. Jans and Smith connected again with 8.5 seconds remaining in the first quarter to give Wingate a 6-3 lead after one frame. Three of Jans' four goals came in the first quarter as Wingate built an 8-5 halftime advantage. The Bulldogs gradually pulled away, as Smith scored two of his three goals after intermission. Demetrius Chirgott, Mike Delabar and Josh Maphis had two goals each for Catawba. Indian freshman goalkeeper Frank Fish had 24 saves, while Wingate junior netminder John Klish (Matthews, N.C.) recorded 19 saves. Wingate outshot Catawba 43-39. |
