Wingate, N.C.----Wingate University used a three-goal spurt midway through
the third quarter and defeated Catawba College 13-9 in semifinal action at
the 2003 Deep South Conference Men's Lacrosse Tournament on Friday
afternoon at Wingate's Belk Stadium and Martin Field. The second-seeded
Bulldogs advance to Sunday's 2 p.m. final against top-seeded and defending
champion Limestone (at Wingate). The Bulldogs improve to 8-6 overall. The
third-seeded Indians end their season at 7-7 overall, setting a school
record for wins in a season.
Ian Hill (Rochester, N.Y.) scored three goals and added a pair of assists
as Wingate grabbed a 5-4 lead at the break. The Bulldogs would use a
three-goal spurt midway through the third quarter to grab a 10-6 lead with
6:02 left in the quarter. Catawba responded behind Chris Khatri, who
scored two goals in a three-goal run that cut the margin to 10-9. Wingate
would then get two goals Drew Penny (Stafford, Va.) in the final 12 minutes
and posted the 13-9 win.
Hill finished the game with six points for the Bulldogs on four goals and a
pair of assists. Penny tallied a game-high five goal. Catawba was led by
Khatri, who scored four goals, and Josh Maphis, who had a goal and three
assists.
