The Game Story:
Wingate, N.C.----The fourth-ranked Pioneers of C.W. Post defeated Wingate University 15-7 in Division II lacrosse action Saturday afternoon at Irwin Belk Stadium and John R. Martin Field. The game was the season-opener for both teams, as C.W. Post moves to 1-0 and Wingate falls to 0-1.

Freshman attack Eddie Plompen (West Islip, N.Y.) led the C.W. Post attack with three goals and two assists. Senior attack Dave Loftus (Merrick, N.Y.) added three goals and an assist. Senior attack Greg Cerar (Farmingdale, N.Y.) had two goals and two assists for the Pioneers.

Senior midfielder Mike Bayliss (Lorton, Va.) led the Wingate attack with three goals. Senior attack Greg Williams (Woodbridge, Va.) added two goals and an assist for the Bulldogs while senior midfielder Ryan Otterblad (Dumfries, Va.) collected two assists.

The Bulldogs got on the board first, with Williams scoring off a feed from Otterblad three minutes into the first period. The Pioneers had the answer, scoring the game’s next three goals. Plompen tied the game at the 9:23 mark. Junior midfielder Joe Meo (West Sayville, N.Y.) gave C.W. Post the lead with 7:58 remaining in the first period. Loftus capped the run by scoring at the 6:11 mark on a feed from sophomore attack Nicholas Coric (Walnut Creek, Calif.) to make it 3-1.

Bayliss got the Bulldogs within one with a goal at the 4:34 mark. The Pioneers scored the final two goals of the period to take a 5-2 lead going into the second period. A goal from Loftus at the 2:32 mark finished off the scoring in the first.

Cerar scored a man-up goal 17 seconds into the second to make it 6-2. Bayliss took a feed from Williams and found the back of the net for the second time at the 9:10 mark to cut the deficit to three. Post again had the answer, getting a goal from Cerar with 1:13 remaining in the half to make it 7-3 going into intermission.

A goal from redshirt senior Mark Hodsdon (Hilton Head, S.C.) made it 7-4 eight seconds into the second half. The Pioneers answered by scoring the next five goals of the game. Meo got it started at the 12:40 mark. Plompen followed with a goal with three minutes remaining in the third. He added a goal at the 11:19 mark of the fourth to give C.W. Post a 12-4 lead. Williams netted his second goal to cut the lead to seven. Goals from Coric and Loftus put the Pioneers on top 14-5.

C.W. Post held a 34-21 advantage in shots. Senior goalie Daniel Sciulla (Merrick, N.Y.) had two saves for the Pioneers. Senior goalie Evan watts (Winston-Salem, N.C.) racked up seven saves for the Bulldogs.

Wingate returns to action February 22, when they battle New York Tech in Richmond, Va. at 1 p.m.
