| Wingate, N.C.----The Wingate University men's lacrosse team scored
12 first-half goals and made the big lead stand, topping Lees-McRae College
14-5 in Deep South Conference action this afternoon at Irwin Belk Stadium
and John R. Martin Field on the Wingate campus. Wingate is the number 10
team in the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association Division II
top 10.
Wingate is 4-1 overall (1-0 DSC), while Lees-McRae falls to 0-7 overall (0-3 DSC). Wingate hosts Deep South Conference foe Pfeiffer University Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. Lees-McRae returns home to face DSC opponent St. Andrews College next Saturday (March 23) at 3:30 p.m. Wingate sophomore attack Steve Maxwell (Media, Pa.) and senior midfielder Josh Needle (Elbridge, N.Y.) had three goals each for the Bulldogs. Maxwell added two assists for Wingate. The Bulldogs outshot the Bobcats 69-22. Eight different Bulldogs scored goals this afternoon. Maxwell had two of his three scores in the second quarter as Wingate posted seven goals in the frame. Sophomore attack Matt DiMartino (Bayshore, N.Y.) had both of his goals in the second quarter. The Bulldogs opened a 5-0 lead in the first quarter before Lees-McRae got on the board with 25 seconds left in the opening frame on a score by senior midfielder Matt Edmunds. Lees-McRae freshman attack Zack Bridges led the Bobcats with two goals. Wingate sophomore goalkeeper Jonathan Cofer (Kingwood, Texas) played the first three quarters, allowing four goals. He had five saves. Freshman netminder Matt Lovejoy (Thornton, Pa.) played the fourth quarter, allowing one LMC score. He had two saves. Lees-McRae freshman goalkeeper Nick Anderton stayed very busy. Anderton went the distance, recording 31 saves. |
