Wingate vs. Lees-mcrae

The Game Story:
Wingate, N.C.----Wingate University junior attack Steve Maxwell (Media, Pa.) tallied two goals and three assists while the Wingate defense held Lees-McRae College scoreless until the fourth quarter as the Bulldogs defeated the Bobcats 13-1 in a Deep South Conference lacrosse game Saturday afternoon at Irwin Belk Stadium and John R. Martin Field.

Wingate (3-4 overall, 2-0 DSC) returns to conference play next Saturday, hosting NCAA Division II number three Limestone College for a 2 p.m. game. Lees-McRae (0-4 overall, 0-2 DSC) visits Mars Hill College Wednesday, April 2 for a 7 p.m. game.

Maxwell leads the NCAA Division II with 35 points this season. This week's Deep South Conference "player of the week," Maxwell tops the Wingate charts with 18 goals and 17 assists.

Nine different players scored goals for Wingate. More importantly, the Bulldog defense held Lees-McRae scoreless until 6:53 to go in the fourth quarter. Bobcat sophomore attack Zack Bridges found the back of the nets to avert the shutout.

Wingate freshman midfield Chris Manwaring (Vancouver, British Columbia) scored twice, the first two goals of his Bulldog career. Freshman attack Bryan Safarik (Vancouver, British Columbia) and junior midfield Blake Taylor (Victoria, Australia) added two goals each for the Bulldogs.

The Bulldogs led 4-0 at halftime and never looked back. Maxwell had two goals and one assist before intermission. On the afternoon, Wingate outshot Lees-McRae 42-15. Bulldog senior goalie John Klish (Matthews, N.C.) played 45 minutes, recording six saves. Wingate junior netminder Jonathan Cofer (Kingwood, Texas) played the fourth quarter, notching four saves.

Lees-McRae junior goalkeeper Chris Feilder had 17 saves in 54 minutes, while senior goalie Nat Joiner had one save in six minutes. Feilder allowed 12 goals, while Joiner gave up one score.
