| Wingate, N.C.----Limestone College senior attack Devan Spilker
recorded four goals and two assists to lead the number six Saints to a 7-5
Deep South Conference lacrosse victory over host Wingate University this
afternoon at Irwin Belk Stadium and John R. Martin Field.
Limestone (5-2 overall, 3-0 DSC) has won 36 consecutive games against DSC opponents. The Saints host league foe St. Andrews Presbyterian College next Saturday at 2 p.m. The Bulldogs (3-5 overall, 2-1 DSC) return to conference play next Saturday, hosting Mars Hill College for a 2 p.m. game.
Wingate scored first, as junior attack Julio Diaz-Jane (Miami, Fla.) found the back of the nets at the 6:57 mark of the first quarter. Diaz-Jane was assisted on the play by junior attack Steve Maxwell (Media, Pa.).
Spilker answered for the Saints, scoring at the first quarter buzzer on an assist by sophomore midfield Kyle Zentz. Spilker was big in crunch time, as his three remaining goals came in the second half. Limestone scored twice in the second quarter to take a 3-1 lead at intermission. Sophomore midfield Nolan Heavenor and sophomore attack Jesse Buppert recorded second quarter scores for the Saints.
Spilker scored once in the third quarter and twice in the final frame. His last goal (on an assist by Buppert) gave Limestone a 7-3 lead with 9:42 remaining in the contest.
The Bulldogs did not fold the tents, as Wingate scored twice in the final 1:20 to make things interesting. Maxwell led the Bulldogs with two goals and two assists. On the season, the All-DSC attack has 39 points (20 goals and 19 assists).
In the goal, Bulldog senior goalkeeper John Klish (Matthews, N.C.) had 14 saves, allowing seven goals. Saint senior goalkeeper Matt Malloy had 20 saves, giving up five Wingate scores. Both netminders went the distance. Wingate outshot Limestone 31-25.
