Wingate vs. Mars Hill

The Game Story:
Wingate, N.C.----Wingate University junior midfielder Drew Penny (Falmouth, Va.) and sophomore midfielder Blake Taylor (Victoria, Australia) had four goals and two assists each as the Bulldogs defeated Mars Hill 15-5 in the quarterfinals of the Deep South Conference men's lacrosse tournament at Irwin Belk Stadium and John R. Martin Field on the Wingate campus.

The number four seed in the tourney, Wingate improves to 8-4 overall, while number five seed Mars Hill completes its season 3-10 overall. The Bulldogs face NCAA Division II number five (and #1 DSC seed) Limestone College (8-1 overall) in the DSC semifinals at Catawba College's Frock Field Friday evening at 5 p.m.

Wingate opened the game with four unanswered goals. Penny had two goals and one assist in the first quarter as the Bulldogs built a 5-1 lead. Taylor did most of his damage after intermission, as he scored three goals and dished out one assist after the halftime break.

Freshman attack Chris Jans (Fallston, Md.) added three goals for the Bulldogs. Fellow freshman attack Wes Smith (Kent Island, Md.) contributed one goal and two assists.

For Mars Hill, sophomore attack Sean Humphreys had four goals. Humphreys had three of his four scores after halftime. Wingate outshot Mars Hill 56-33. Bulldog junior netminder John Klish (Matthews, N.C.) recorded 11 saves, allowing four goals. Wingate sophomore goalkeeper Jonathan Cofer (Kingwood, Texas) played the fourth quarter, giving up one goal and recording seven saves. Mars Hill freshman goalkeeper Chris Kingston went distance, allowing 15 goals and notching 23 saves.
