Wingate University lacrosse team opens DSC tourney play with 21-7 win over Mars Hill

Wingate, N.C.----Freshman attack Bryan Safarik (Vancouver, B.C.) had five goals to lead a balanced offense as the Wingate University lacrosse team defeated Mars Hill College 21-7 Tuesday afternoon in the first round of the Deep South Conference tournament at Irwin Belk Stadium and John R. Martin Field.

Wingate is 7-6 overall, while Mars Hill concludes its season 0-12 overall. The number two seed Bulldogs will play number three seed Catawba College (7-6 overall) Friday at 4 p.m. Wingate University will host the DSC semifinals Friday and the DSC title game Sunday.

Wingate led 8-1 at halftime. The Bulldogs made a 9-0 run spanning the third and fourth quarters to take a 20-4 lead on a Safarik goal with 7:35 to play in the contest.

Two Wingate seniors had big games: attack Ian Hill (Rochester, N.Y.) had two goals and a game-high five assists. Midfield Drew Penny (Stafford, Va.) contributed three goals and one assist.

Wingate junior attack Steve Maxwell (Media, Pa.) had four goals and two assists. Maxwell is the number two scorer in the DSC with 62 points (30 goals, 32 assists).

Mars Hill junior attack Sean Humphreys had three goals and one assist for the Lions. Wingate outshot Mars Hill 56-19. Bulldog senior goalkeeper John Klish (Matthews, N.C.) played three quarters. Klish allowed four goals and recorded seven saves. Wingate junior netminder Jonathan Cofer (Kingwood, Texas) played the final 15 minutes. He gave up three goals and saved two shots.
