Wingate vs. Mercyhurst

The Game Story:
Wingate, N.C.----Mercyhurst College junior attack Mike McLellan had five goals and one assist as the number eight Lakers defeated Wingate University 20-4 in men^s lacrosse action Wednesday afternoon at Irwin Belk Stadium and John R. Martin Field on the Wingate campus.

The contest was the season-opening game for Mercyhurst, an NCAA Division II final four participant in 2003. Wingate is 1-2 overall. The Lakers visit another Deep South Conference member in Mars Hill College Friday at 4 p.m. The Bulldogs open DSC play Wednesday, March 10 with a 4 p.m. home game against St. Andrews Presbyterian College.

Mercyhurst scored seven times in the first quarter and added five more in the second to take a 12-2 lead at intermission. Laker junior attack Jerod Felice topped the point parade with a goal and nine assists. Felice scored the first goal of the game three minutes into the first quarter.

The Lakers outshot the Bulldogs 54-21. MC senior goalkeeper Mike Rispoli played the first three periods in goal, recording seven saves. Wingate senior netminder Jonathan Cofer (Kingwood, Texas) played almost 50 minutes, notching 15 saves.

The Lakers scored five goals in ten extra-man opportunities while Wingate finished two of seven. Four Bulldogs scored one goal each. Junior attack Travis Rimert (Berwyn, Pa.) scored his first career goal for the Bulldogs. Senior midfielder Blake Taylor (Williamstown, Victoria, Australia) also recorded a goal for the hosts.
