The Game Story:
Laurinburg, N.C.----The New York Institute of Technology men's lacrosse team bolted to a 6-1 lead and survived a furious Wingate University rally to take an 8-7 win this afternoon at St. Andrews Presbyterian College.

The number two team in the 2003 Inside Lacrosse/Face Off Magazine NCAA Division II preseason coaches poll, the Bears improve to 2-0 overall. The Wingate University Bulldogs fall to 0-1 overall. Wingate travels to Greensboro College Saturday for a 1 p.m. game. New York Tech hosts Merrimack (Mass.) College Tuesday, March 11 at 3:30 p.m.

New York Tech outscored Wingate 4-0 in the first quarter, thanks to two goals from sophomore attack Paul Montali. The Bears stretched their advantage to 6-1 on a goal by junior attack Sean Meagher with 12:24 remaining in the third quarter.

Wingate scored six goals in the second half to make things very interesting. Senior midfielder Drew Penny (Stafford, Va.) scored two second half goals to lead the Wingate charge. Penny was named a NCAA Division II preseason first team All-American by Inside Lacrosse/Face Off Magazine.

The Bulldogs outscored the Bears 4-0 in the fourth quarter, cutting the margin to 8-7 on an unassisted goal by junior midfield Blake Taylor (Victoria, Australia) with 1:51 to go in the contest. Wingate got two good looks at the goal in the waning moments, but could not convert.

Penny and junior attack Steve Maxwell (Media, Pa.) scored two goals each for Wingate. Maxwell handed out two assists to go with his two goals. Montali led New York Tech with three goals. Sophomore midfield Tom Zummo had two goals and one assist, while Meagher added one goal and two assists.

Wingate senior goalkeeper John Klish (Matthews, N.C.) recorded 15 saves. The Bears outshot the Bulldogs 34-24. New York Tech senior netminder Matt Hunter had eight saves.
