Wingate vs. Pfeiffer

The Game Story:
Wingate, N.C.----The sixth-ranked Bulldogs of Wingate University defeated Pfeiffer University 11-5 Wednesday afternoon in NCAA Division II lacrosse action at Irwin Belk Stadium and John R. Martin Field. Wingate improves to 6-1 overall, while the Pfeiffer Falcons fall to 0-4.



Sophomore midfielder Jameson Schultz (High Point, N.C.) led the Pfeiffer attack with two goals. Sophomore attack Chad Olsen (Great Mills, Md.) added a goal and an assist.



The Falcons struck first, getting a goal from sophomore attack Wesley McMahon (Olney, Md.) at the 13:13 mark. Wingate answered with back-to-back goals from Torkington. Olsenís goal with 5:17 remaining in the first half tied the game at two. Chinn scored with 1:39 to go to give Wingate a 3-2 lead going into intermission.



In the third, Costello scored a goal, then set up junior midfielder Evan Watts (Winston-Salem, N.C.) less than a minute later to give Wingate a three-goal lead at 5-2. The Falcons had the answer, getting an unassisted goal from Schultz to trim the lead back to two. Wingate senior midfielder Mark Hodsdon (Hilton Head, S.C.) found the back of the net at the three-minute mark to give the Bulldogs a 7-4 lead.



Schultz tallied another goal for Pfeiffer to once again cut it two. Costello scored his second goal of the period, with the assist from freshman defender Kris Stanford (Stafford, Va.), to give the Bulldogs an 8-5 lead heading into the fourth.



Wingate blanked the Falcons in the fourth frame, as Torkington started the fourth-quarter barrage with a tally at the 9:53 mark. A pair of goals from Chinn 10 seconds apart helped the hosts prevail 11-5.



The Bulldogs held a 39-29 edge in shots, including a 26-14 advantage in shots on goal. Wingate senior goalie David Suthers (Manassas, Va.) had nine saves for the Bulldogs. Senior netminder Pat Martin (Leanordtown, Md.) racked up 15 saves for the Falcons.
