| Wingate, N.C.----Wingate University junior attack Kyle Costello (Wilmington, N.C.) scored six goals and dished out four assists as the Bulldogs defeated Saint Vincent (Pa.) College 20-9 in men's lacrosse action Tuesday afternoon at Irwin Belk Stadium and John R. Martin Field. Wingate improves to 3-0 overall, while Saint Vincent falls to 0-2 overall. The Bulldogs hit the road this weekend, visiting Saint Leo (Fla.) University Friday for a Deep South Conference contest. Game time is 7 p.m. The Bearcats return home Saturday, March 17, hosting Hartwick (N.Y.) College (1 p.m.). Costello scored four of Wingate's first six goals as the Bulldogs sprinted to a 10-4 lead at intermission. Costello also contributed eight ground balls to Wingate's defensive efforts. In 2006, Costello recorded 31 goals and 36 assists. He was fourth in the NCAA Division II in assists last season. Wingate redshirt freshman attack Angus Derbyshire (Thurmont, Md.) had the biggest day of his young Bulldog career, netting four goals for the hosts. Bulldog senior midfielder Bryan Safarik (Vancouver, B.C.) had three goals and two assists, while sophomore attack Ryan Otterblad (Dumfries, Va.) contributed two goals and two assists. Saint Vincent senior attack Bart Costello (Lexington, Mass.) scored five goals for the Bearcats. Wingate outshot Saint Vincent 45-26. The Bulldogs took advantage of 13 Bearcat penalties to score five extra-man goals. Wingate junior goalkeeper David Suthers (Manassas, Va.) played 56 minutes, allowing seven goals. Suthers recorded nine saves. Bulldog sophomore netminder Chad Watson (Cary, N.C.) played the final four minutes, giving up two goals. Bearcat senior goalkeeper Alden Ainsworth (Penfield, N.Y.) played the first half. He allowed 10 goals and recorded six saves. SVC freshman netminder Jon McMahon (Glastonbury, Conn.) played the second half. The newcomer gave up 10 goals and notched six saves. |
