Wingate vs. Wheeling Jesuit

The Game Story:
Wingate, N.C.----Senior Kyle Costello (Wilmington, N.C.) and freshman Seth Crowell (Pfafftown, N.C.) each scored three goals while senior Mark Hodsdon (Hilton Head, S.C.) added a goal and five assists to lead Wingate University to a 16-10 NCAA Division II menís lacrosse victory over Wheeling Jesuit University Saturday afternoon at Irwin Belk Stadium and John R. Martin Field. Wingate is 1-0 on the year, while the Cardinals are 0-1.

Jeff Arneson (Wilmington, Ohio) had three goals and an assist for Wheeling Jesuit. Jack Malone (Farmington Hills, Mich.) and Trevor Veres (Windsor, Ontario) each had two goals and an assist for the Cardinals.

The game would stay tight throughout the first half. The score was tied 3-3 after the first quarter. The Bulldogs would score three of the final four goals of the first half, (two by Costello) to take an 8-6 halftime lead. Costello had two goals and two assists in the first half.

Wingate would then score the first four goals of the third quarter, with two from Billy Mutton (Mechanicsville, Va.). The Bulldogs outscored Wheeling Jesuit 5-1 in the pivotal third quarter. Hodsdon picked up three of his assists in the period.

Each team would score a pair of goals in the fourth period, making the final score 16-10. Wingate scored 10 of the gameís final 14 goals.

The Bulldogs held a 39-26 advantage in shots. Senior goalie David Suthers (Manassas, Va.) had nine saves for the Bulldogs. Wheeling Jesuitís Joe Sims (Dublin, Ohio) also picked up nine saves on the day.
