|Wingate, N.C.----Saint Leo University senior attack Frank Keel (Fairfax, Va.) tallied three goals and the number eight Lions collected a 10-3 Deep South Conference victory over Wingate University Wednesday afternoon at Irwin Belk Stadium and John R. Martin Field on the Wingate campus.|
The contest was the league opener for both teams. Saint Leo is 2-0 overall and 1-0 in the DSC. Wingate is 0-2 overall and 0-1 in the DSC. The Bulldogs will face their third ranked team in as many games Saturday, hosting number four Mercyhurst (Pa.) University at 2 p.m. The SLU Lions continue their N.C. swing Friday night, visiting Queens University of Charlotte for a 7 p.m. contest.
Keel led all scorers with his three goals. Freshman teammate George Proechel (Orlando, Fla.) had two goals from his attack position. Keel and reigning Deep South Conference Offensive Player of the Week Joe Guerin (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.) share the Saint Leo team lead with six goals each. A senior attack, Guerin had one goal Wednesday.
For Wingate, redshirt sophomore midfielder Travis Barrett (Andover, N.J.) had one goal and one assist. Bulldog sophomore attack David Lee (Greensboro, N.C.) and junior attack Billy Mutton (Mechanicsville, Va.) had one goal each for the hosts.
Saint Leo led 6-1 at intermission, thanks in large part to two first quarter goals by Keel. Lion senior attack Cole Sieja (Troy, Mich.) opened the scoring at the 13:56 mark with an unassisted goal. Lee answered for Wingate, taking a pass from sophomore midfielder Bryan Bayliss (Lorton, Va.) and finding the back of the nets with 8:08 remaining in the opening frame.
Keel went to work, collecting a pass from Sieja and breaking the game’s only tie at the 4:35 mark. Keel added an unassisted goal with 2:25 left in the first period to help the Lions take a 3-1 lead after the first 15 minutes.
SLU senior midfielder Kyle Marceau (Concord, N.H.) opened the second quarter scoring at the 12:03 mark. The Lions led 6-1 at the break, thanks to goals by senior attack Luke Baruch (Golden, Colo.) and Proechel. Baruch scored on a Marceau assist at 6:34, while Proechel completed the first half scoring at 6:22.
Proechel opened the third quarter with an extra-man goal at the 13:52 plateau. Keel finished his scoring night with a goal at the 12:07 mark of the fourth quarter, completing a 7-0 run by the defending Deep South Conference champions.
The Bulldogs scored back-to-back goals to cut the deficit to 8-3. Barrett scored on an assist from freshman attack Colin O'Donoghue (Cranberry Township, Pa.) with 11:32 remaining in the contest. Mutton posted his second goal of the season 27 seconds later on an assist from Barrett.
Saint Leo sophomore midfielder Mike Del Buono (Southington, Conn.) scored five seconds later (11:00) from the face-off. Guerin completed the scoring with an unassisted tally at the 10-minute mark.
Wingate sophomore goalie Danny Dlugozima (Wesley Chapel, Fla.) took the loss, allowing 10 goals in 59-plus minutes of action. Dlugozima kept the Bulldogs close with his 18 saves. Saint Leo junior netminder David Erdman (Mt. Sinai, N.Y.) earned the win. The 2007 DSC Freshman of the Year went the distance Wednesday, recording four saves and allowing three Wingate goals.
The SLU Lions outshot the host Bulldogs 47-20 Wednesday. Saint Leo won 12 of 17 face-offs, thanks to 12 victories by Del Buono. The Lions had 59 ground balls, compared to 19 ground ball pick-ups for the Bulldogs. Saint Leo converted the game’s only extra-man opportunity. The Lions were one-of-five on EMO possessions, while the Bulldogs were zero-for-seven.
