March 3, 2012
The Game Story:
Wingate, N.C.----Wingate University senior attack David Lee (Greensboro, N.C.) scored a season-high six goals to lead the Bulldogs to a 16-8 Deep South Conference men’s lacrosse victory over Rollins (Fla.) College at Irwin Belk Stadium and John R. Martin Field Saturday. Wingate (2-2 overall, 1-1 DSC) did not trail against Rollins (1-5 overall, 1-4 DSC) Saturday.

Lee tops the Bulldog charts with his 12 goals this season. Wingate sophomore midfield Troy Press (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y.) had three goals and two assists Saturday, while senior midfield Bryan Bayliss (Lorton, Va.) matched Press with his three goals. Bulldog junior attack Derek Watts (Winston-Salem, N.C.) had one goal and a team-high three assists.

For Rollins, freshman attack Will Diamond (Delray Beach, Fla.) had two goals and one assist. Six teammates had one goal each. Rollins graduate student and face-off specialist Peter Harvey (Princeton, N.J.) won 18-of-25 face-offs and collected a team-high 14 ground balls. Harvey also dished out an assist.

“We showed great patience on the offensive end,” Wingate head coach Sonny Ziegler says. “We ran our offense…and worked for good opportunities. I thought we did a better job shooting the ball today.”

On the defensive end, Wingate held its third of four opponents to eight goals or less. “We did a great job on defense today,” Ziegler says. “Rollins has many talented offensive players. For us to play defense the way did…makes the coach happy.”

Wingate senior goalkeeper Danny Dlugozima (Wesley Chapel, Fla.) earned his second victory of the season, allowing six goals and recording 10 saves in 51-plus minutes. He had a team-high seven ground balls. Bulldog redshirt sophomore net minder Patrick Cooney (Cazenovia, N.Y.) played almost seven minutes, surrendering two goals and notching one save. True freshman goalie Travis Price (Greensboro, N.C.) saw his first collegiate action for the Bulldogs Saturday.

Four different Wingate players scored to give the Bulldogs a 4-0 lead early in the second quarter. Derek Watts posted his seventh goal of the season on an assist from junior midfield Garrett Kendall (Greer, S.C.) to open the scoring at the 7:42 mark. Watts assisted junior attack Taylor Womble (Cary, N.C.) four minutes later to give Wingate a 2-0 lead after the first 15 minutes.

Bayliss and sophomore midfield James Wells (Ashburn, Va.) scored back-to-back unassisted goals to give the hosts their 4-0 second quarter advantage. Diamond opened the scoring for Rollins at the 8:03 mark on an assist from junior attack Taylor White (Mantoloking, N.J.). Lee and Bayliss posted goals on assists from Womble and Watts to complete the second quarter scoring. The Bulldogs led 6-1 at the halftime break.

The Tars cut the deficit to 6-3 with two goals in the first minute of the third quarter. Lee answered with a personal 4-0 run to put the game on ice. Kendall completed the five-goal explosion to give Wingate an 11-3 lead at the 5:29 mark. Rollins cut the deficit to 11-6 at the end of the third frame, but the Tars would get no closer the rest of the way.

The Bulldogs converted four extra-man opportunities, including two on a two-minute, non-releasable RC foul in the fourth quarter. The Rollins Tars were not as opportunistic, as they converted only one-of-five EMO chances. Rollins won 19-of-28 face-offs and held a slim 41-39 in ground balls.
