|#12 Lake Erie storms past Wingate 17-7 Sunday|
Wingate, N.C.----Lake Erie senior attack Keegan Bal (Coquitlam, B.C.) posted four goals and two assists to lead the number 12 Storm to a 17-7 NCAA Division II men’s lacrosse victory over Wingate Sunday afternoon at Irwin Belk Stadium and John R. Martin Field. LEC improves to 11-3 overall on the season, while Wingate is 2-14 overall (NCAA box score).
Bulldog senior attack Derek Watts (Winston-Salem, N.C.) led Wingate with four goals and one assist. WU senior attack Taylor Womble (Cary, N.C.), sophomore attack Cory Schumacher (Gainesville, Va.) and freshman attack Ryan Vogrig (Vancouver, B.C.) had one goal each. Womble and Vogrig recorded assists. Sophomore midfield Chase Watts (Winston-Salem, N.C.) dished out two assists to top the Bulldog charts.
The Storm bolted to a 9-1 lead with 11:31 remaining in the second quarter. LEC junior attack Trevor Tarte (Amherstburg, Ontario) led the visitors with three goals during the opening flurry. Two of Tarte’s goals were the result of extra-man opportunities. Lake Erie junior attack/midfield Joeyjohn French (Tully, N.Y.) concluded the run on an assist from freshman attack Will Mulcahy (Batavia, N.Y.) at the 11:31 mark.
Wingate finished the half with a 4-0 push to cut the deficit to 9-5 at intermission. Derek Watts put the exclamation point on the run with back-to-back goals separated by 37 seconds. Womble assisted on Watts’ EMO goal with 2:45 to play in the second stanza, finishing the first half scoring.
Four different Lake Erie players scored a goal to make the score 13-5 early in the third quarter. Bal concluded the run (on a Tarte assist) with 11:35 left in the third frame. Derek Watts answered with a Wingate goal five minutes later (on a Chase Watts assist), but the Bulldogs would get no closer down the stretch.
Lake Erie outshot Wingate 49-22. The Storm converted three-of-three extra-man chances. The Storm had 37 ground balls, while the Bulldogs collected 32. LEC senior midfield Bill Desiderio (Lancaster, N.Y.) won 16 face-offs, while Wingate junior midfield Bryce Sneed (Apex, N.C.) had 12 face-off triumphs.
Both goalkeepers went the distance. Storm freshman goalkeeper Tom Lipomi (Hamburg, N.Y.) recorded the victory with five saves and seven goals allowed. Bulldog sophomore goalkeeper Travis Price (Greensboro, N.C.) had 12 saves and 17 goals surrendered. Both Price and Lipomi scooped up five ground balls each.
