Wingate vs. Tampa

The Game Story:
Wingate, N.C.----The University of Tampa rallied for an 8-7 Deep South Conference men’s lacrosse victory over host Wingate University Friday afternoon at Irwin Belk Stadium and John R. Martin Field. Bulldog attack David Lee (Greensboro, N.C.) had four goals and one assist to lead the Wingate offense.

Tampa scored three goals in the fourth quarter to take the victory. Lee’s fourth goal of the game put the hosts up 7-5 with 5:11 remaining in regulation. Tampa junior midfield Greg Griffo (Babylon, N.Y.) scored back-to-back goals to tie the game 7-7 three minutes later. Griffo led the visitors with four goals and two assists Friday.

With 1:45 to play, Spartan freshman attack Jonathan Franzese (Lynbrook, N.Y.) tallied the game-winner on an assist from freshman midfield Andrew Hoffman (Kent, Conn.). The Bulldogs had chances in the waning moments, but could not find the back of the nets.

Lee scored three of his four goals after halftime. Midway through the third quarter, Lee scored back-to-back EMO goals to give the Bulldogs a 5-4 lead at the 8:12 mark. Tampa junior attack AJ DeSimone (Utica, N.Y.) tied the contest 5-5 three minutes later on an assist from Griffo.

Bulldog junior attack Derek Watts (Winston-Salem, N.C.) gave Wingate a 6-5 advantage at the third quarter buzzer, setting the stage for a wild fourth quarter. Watts was second on the Wingate scoring charts Friday with his two goals and one assist.

The Bulldogs outshot the Spartans 23-11 after intermission and 37-26 for the game. Tampa had 43 ground balls to 33 for Wingate. The Spartans won 11-of-16 face-offs. The Bulldogs converted two-of-six EMO chances, while the Spartans were unsuccessful in both of their two EMO tries.

Wingate senior goalkeeper Danny Dlugozima (Wesley Chapel, Fla.) allowed eight goals and recorded six saves in 60 minutes. Tampa junior netminder Joseph Fiorucci (Shirley, N.Y.) also went the distance. He had 17 saves and allowed seven goals.

The Bulldogs return to the field Wednesday, hosting Belmont Abbey College for a 3:30 p.m. contest. Tampa visits Coker College Sunday for a 12 noon game.
