Wingate vs. Cabrini

The Game Story:
Wingate, N.C.----Cabrini College senior midfield Mike Pape scored the game-winner on a rebound shot with 2:43 remaining, leading the Cavaliers to a thrilling 8-7 men's lacrosse win over host Wingate University this afternoon at Irwin Belk Stadium and John R. Martin Field on the Wingate campus. The Bulldogs have lost two one-goal games this season.

With the victory, Cabrini (1-0 overall) wins its season opener. The Bulldogs fall to 0-4 overall. Wingate hosts Wheeling Jesuit (W.Va.) University Friday, March 14 at 3:30 p.m. The Cavaliers continue their North Carolina tour Saturday, visiting Greensboro College. First face-off is schedule for noon Saturday.

Cabrini trailed 5-4 entering the fourth quarter. The Cavaliers scored two goals in 22 seconds to take a 6-5 lead. Junior attack Michael Piccoli tied the game at five with 5:35 to play. He was assisted by freshman attack Matt Campbell.

Campbell gave Cabrini a 6-5 lead on an unassisted goal at the 5:13 mark. Wingate senior midfield Drew Penny (Stafford, Va.) tied the game at six on an unassisted goal with 4:24 left in regulation.

Pape was in the right place at the right time to hit the game-winner. Cavalier sophomore midfield Rory Friel hit the post with a bullet. The ball bounced out to Pape and he capitalized with 2:43 remaining.

Cabrini freshman midfielder Kevin Rayer scored an insurance goal on an assist from Piccoli at the 1:57 mark. Penny scored again with 16.3 seconds left to make it 8-7 Cabrini. The Bulldogs won the face-off and got one more look at the goal, but they could not convert.

Cabrini outshot Wingate 38-26. Pape and Rayer had two goals each for the victors. Rayer added an assist. For Wingate, junior attack Steve Maxwell (Media, Pa.) had a huge game, scoring three goals and dishing out one assist to lead all scorers.

Cabrini junior goalkeeper Antonio Masone had 11 saves. He allowed seven goals. Wingate senior netminder John Klish (Matthews, N.C.) had 16 saves, giving up eight goals.
