Wingate vs. Roanoke

The Game Story:
Wingate, N.C.-- The Roanoke College men's lacrosse team made an early lead stand, topping Wingate University 15-8 this afternoon at Irwin Belk Stadium and John R. Martin Field on the Wingate campus. With the victory, Roanoke (1-0 overall) wins its season opener. The Bulldogs fall to 0-3 overall on the young season.

Wingate hosts Cabrini (Pa.) College Wednesday at 2 p.m., while the Maroons return home Saturday, March 8 to host Kenyon (Ohio) College at noon.

Roanoke junior attack Kris Davis led all scorers with three goals and two assists. Sophomore attack Dan Reed added three goals and one assist. The Maroons scored the first six goals of the game to take a 6-1 lead after one quarter. Davis had two goals in the opening frame.

Wingate rallied, shutting out Roanoke 3-0 in the second quarter to cut the Maroons' lead to 6-4 at intermission. Freshman midfield Sean McElroy scored one of his team-high two goals in the second quarter.

The Bulldogs would get no closer than the halftime score. Roanoke opened the third quarter with a 4-1 run, giving the Maroons a 10-5 lead on a goal by junior midfield Garrett Yaralian at the 4:45 mark. Davis and Reed had one goal each during the 4-1 third quarter flurry.

Ten different players scored goals for Roanoke. In addition to the hat tricks by Davis and Reed, senior midfield Joe Weeren contributed two goals for the visitors.

McElroy's two goals give him three goals on the season. Wingate junior attack Steve Maxwell (Media, Pa.) had one goal and two assists for the Bulldogs. Senior midfield Ian Hill (Rochester, N.Y.) dished out two assists for the hosts.

In the goal, Roanoke senior goalkeeper Tim Morse faced 39 shots, allowing eight goals. Morse had 20 saves. Wingate senior netminder John Klish (Matthews, N.C.) gave up 15 goals. Klish faced 34 shots, recording 16 saves.
