April 25, 2009
The Game Story:
Manchester, N.H. - Senior midfielder Brian Welch (Ithaca, N.Y./Ithaca) and sophomore attackman Jack Harmatuk (Syracuse, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy/Syracuse U.) each scored twice in the third quarter as the #1-ranked Le Moyne College men's lacrosse team pulled away from Southern New Hampshire for an 11-5 victory in Northeast-10 Conference action at Larkin Field on Saturday afternoon.

Southern New Hampshire opened the scoring less than two minutes into the first quarter. Terrence Nash took a feed from Sean Ball and scored at the 13:08 mark as Le Moyne fell behind for just the third time this season. Le Moyne, which leads the nation in scoring defense at 3.85 goals per game, has trailed for only 21:13 on the year.

The Dolphins answered back eight minutes later as sophomore midfielder Matt Chadderdon (Auburn, N.Y./Auburn) tallied an unassisted goal. Welch put in his first of three goals in the game at the 1:49 mark of the opening quarter off a pass from sophomore attackman Nick DiSarro (Niskayuna, N.Y./Niskayuna). SNHU's Andrew Brown knotted the score 15 seconds later after taking a pass from Dustin Latham.

Le Moyne, which went undefeated in conference action for the ninth time in the last 10 seasons, used a pair of extra-man goals to build a 4-2 advantage. Harmatuk scored an unassisted goal with 10:23 remaining in the second quarter, while Chadderdon scored off an assist from DiSarro with just under five minutes left in the stanza. Latham closed out the half with a goal after taking a pass from Keith Merluzzo with 28 seconds to go.

The Dolphins tallied five straight goals in the third quarter to pull away from the Penmen. Following an unnecessary roughness penalty on SNHU, Welch converted an unassisted goal just over one minute into the period. Junior midfielder Brian Orlando (Great Falls, Va./Flint Hill/Bridgton Academy) and Welch scored less than minute apart midway through the quarter to take a 7-3 edge. Harmatuk scored twice over the final 8:36 of the quarter, with the first being assisted by classmate Jack Venditti (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker), to extend the margin to six.

Freshman attackman Sean Connors (Camillus, N.Y./Marcellus) and senior midfielder Brooks Robinson (Preble, N.Y./Tully/Onondaga C.C.) continued Le Moyne's scoring streak in the opening 9:04 of the final quarter. Connors put in an unassisted tally at the 10:57 mark, while Robinson scored with 5:56 remaining in the contest. Merluzzo and Brown closed out the scoring in the game with goals off passes from Matt Sowles and Mike Ball, respectively. Mike Ball, the second-leading scorer in the conference and ninth-best in the country, was held without a goal for just the second time in his two-year career at SNHU.

Senior goalkeeper Doug McIver (Altamont, N.Y./Albany Academy) posted nine saves in just over 54 minutes of action, while allowing just three goals. Freshman Sebastian Baker (Ithaca, N.Y./Ithaca) played the final 5:56 between the pipes for the Dolphins. Brendan O'Brien registered 14 saves for the Penmen.

Le Moyne (13-0, NE-10 9-0), which clinches the Northeast-10 Conference regular-season championship for the eighth time in the last nine years, will host an NE-10 semifinal contest on Friday, May 1 at 4:00 p.m. against the winner of Tuesday's opening round match-up between the fourth and fifth seeds.
