Queens vs. Wheeling Jesuit

The Game Story:
CHARLOTTE, N.C.- In a very wet, cold, and blustery day at the Queens University of Charlotte Sports Complex at Marion Diehl Park in a non-conference game between the Royals and the Cardinal of Wheeling Jesuit University Sunday afternoon. The visiting Cardinals (1-0) picked up the win, 9-7.

Queens’ (2-1/1-1 Conference Carolinas) Cory Thomas (Columbia, Md., River Hill) posted the first goal less than two minutes into play, unassisted. The two teams traded goals and were tied at two at the end of the first quarter.

B.J. Leighton (Apex, NC, Apex) opened the second quarter up with one of his two goals. The Royals offense followed with two more goals, one from Brian Lipscomb (Hilton Head, S.C., Hilton Head ) and one from Alex Wesenberg (Bloominton, Minn., Jefferson). WJU countered with two goals of their own before the end of the half.

Just at half time, lightning was spotted and the teams were cleared from the field for close to an hour.

The break refreshed the Cardinals and they scored five unanswered goals in the third period. Kyle Luca scored two of the five while Jake Malone contributed one goal and had two assists.

Heading into the fourth, Queens trailed by four, 9-5. The Royals rallied, putting on the pressure all over the field and were able to get six shots off. Leighton and Stephan LeBlanc (Restoule, Ontario, Highland) connected to cut the lead down, but Queens ran out of time and could not force the comeback.

Brandon Macknew (Abington, Md., Bel Air) made 10 saves for Queens and Joe Sims made 11 for WJU.

Queens takes to the road on March 7 to play Rollins College in Winter Park, Fla. On the trip south Queens also faces St. Leo University, and C.W. Post
