|April 9 – The Notre Dame de Namur lacrosse team moved to 5-0 with a win over rival Dominican 12-10. The game was back-and-forth from the start with the Argos using a big four period to pull out the victory. |
The Argos scored first, just over a minute into the game when Kevin Nguyen beat his man, ducked inside and scored. Dominican answered eight second later, winning the face-off and scoring on the first pass. After another Penguin goal, Giovanni Midili took a feed from Greg Bearson to tie the game at 2-2. The Penguins once again answered right back, retaking the lead 17 seconds later. Bearson and Derek Kimbrough scored back-to-back goals for NDNU before Dominican tied the game at 4-4 in the closing seconds of the first period.
The second period featured five more goals with the Penguins netting the first two. After Brock Beall’s goal gave DU a 6-4 lead with 5:40 remaining in the half, the Argos quickly tied the game with two goals in six seconds. On both goals, Nguyen won the face-off, rushed down field and fed a teammate for the goal. Nick Peterson and Ryan Hulsey converted the chances to tie the score at 6-6. Reed Upson scored the final goal of the half with 1:13 left to give the Penguins a 7-6 halftime lead.
Hulsey knotted the game at 7-7 in the opening minutes of the second half, batting in a loose ball for his second goal of the day. Upson gave the lead back to Dominican on an extra-man opportunity before Bearson tied the score once again. Dominican closed out the period with a goal by Jim Little with 11 seconds left to send the game to the fourth with the Penguins leading 9-8.
The Argos offense got going in the fourth, scoring four of the five goals in the period. Nguyen tied the game at 9-9 with 11:38 remaining on a feed from Jacob Hayashi. Two minutes later, Hulsey knocked down a clear attempt, scooped it up and beat the goalie on a breakaway. Cam Evangelho tied the game once again with 8:06 remaining on a feed from the behind the net.
With 6:45 left, Kimbrough put the Argos up for good, running from the right side, spinning and firing a shot past the goalie. Bearson iced the game with 2:50 left, ripping a shot off the post and into the net for a 12-10 victory.
NDNU held a 36-23 shot advantage and picked up 12 more groundballs (37-25). The Argos also won 17 of 26 face-offs.
Bearson and Hulsey each recorded a hat trick in their final home game as an Argonaut. Nguyen added two goals and two assist while picking up a game high nine groundballs and winning 11 of 13 face-offs. Kimbrough also tallied two goals, including the game-winner. Hunter Adams made five stops in net for NDNU and allowed just three second half goals.
Little tallied a game high five points for Dominican with two goals and three assists. Reed Upson and Cam Evangelho netted a hat trick each while Sean Donohue made 12 saves in net
