Saint Leo vs. Mars Hill
February 11, 2006
The Game Story:
St. LEO, FL - The Lions defeated St. Leo University this afternoon, 15-12 in their 2006 season opening game. MHC fought through a lot of adversity to win the contest as all but five players on the 30-man squad were suffering through a stomach virus that kept the majority of the players up the night before the contest. The Lions improve to 1-0 while St. Leo fell to 0-1 on the year.

MHC jumped out to a 9-2 lead after the first quarter but fatigue set in and the Lions allowed SLU to score seven unanswered goals in the second frame to send the teams into the locker room at halftime with the scored knotted at nine-all.

The Lions regrouped in the locker room and made some personnel changes to alleviate some of the issues the fatigue was causing the Lions. More players from the Lions bench were asked to step up and play needed minutes in the second half. The defense stiffened as the Lions allowed only two goals in the third stanza and one goal in the fourth quarter to seal the win.

Andrew Chapman (Toronto, Ontario) led MHC with eight goals and six ground balls followed by David Kemp (Webster, NY) with three goals and three ground balls. Matt Holthaus (Churchville, MD) played all 60 minutes in goal for MHC making 16 saves.

Ryan Harris led SLU with five goals and two assists. Austin Ford also played the entire game in the net for SLU and made 22 saves in the loss.

MHC out shot SLU 43-to-28. They also had 19 more ground balls (49-30) than SLU.
