| CLINTON, S.C. – The start of the Presbyterian College men’s lacrosse inaugural season was not a pleasant one as the visiting Saints of No. 3/4 Limestone College handed the Blue Hose a 27-1 setback at Johnson Field in Old Bailey Stadium on Friday afternoon. Limestone had 16 players score, including seven who had two or more goals, as the Saints welcomed PC to Deep South Conference action.|
Limestone (1-0, 1-0 DSC) posted a 5-0 advantage after the first period as senior attacker Pat Beall (Mt. Airy, Md.) dished out two assists. Beall went on to finish the game with five points on two goals and three assists.
The Saints stretched their lead to 11-0 at halftime as sophomore Brock Spilker (Pasadena, Md.) notched a hat trick and junior attacker Ryan Collins (Black River, N.Y.) had a pair of assists in the second stanza.
LC exploded in the third period, tallying nine goals. Freshman attacker Ryan Verrilli (Manassas, Va.) had a pair of goals in the quarter, while the Blue Hose’s freshman attacker Tyler Dunn (Casheirs, N.C.) put Presbyterian (0-1, 0-1 DSC) on the scoreboard, completing a pass from sophomore attacker Jared Domino (St. Albert, Alberta) at 8:31.
The Saints added their final seven goals of the game in the fourth period and freshman attacker Drew Comeau (Red Deer, Alberta) scored two man-up goals in a span of 24 seconds.
The Blue Hose held a marginal 25-24 advantage in ground balls for the game, but were plagued with 31 turnovers. Limestone out-shot PC, 54-10, and won 18 of 28 face-offs. The Blue Hose committed 12 penalties and the Saints capitalized on the situation by converting eight-of-12 extra-man opportunities.
Freshman defenseman Drew Tobias (Whitsett, N.C.) led PC with a pair of caused turnovers. In goal, freshman David Hetu (Apex, N.C.) made 11 saves, while collecting a game-high nine ground balls.
Spilker paced the Saint offense with four goals and six points, while contributing on the defensive end with two caused turnovers. Collins finished with four assists and five points, while Verrilli and freshman attacker Harry Thompson (Victoria, British Columbia) each chipped in three goals. Senior attacker Harley Beekman (Amsterdam, N.Y.) won 10 of 12 face-offs for Limestone and scooped up four groundballs.
Juniors Marty Ward (Syracuse, N.Y.) and Charlie Gray (Edgewater, Md.) and senior Ryan Demorest (Bloomfield Twp., Mich.) combined for five stops for the Saints.
The Blue Hose return to action on Wednesday, February 22, when PC travels to Mars Hill, N.C., to face
Mars Hill College in league action at 7:00. Limestone will take on Mars Hill in Gaffney, S.C., on February 25 at 3:00.
