|The Griffin men's lacrosse team competed against Dominican College in their home opener this Saturday. SHU was simply sensational as they pounded the Chargers of Dominican College by a score of 20-7. With the win, the Griffins improve to 2-1 overall (1-1 in ECC play). |
The Griffins got on the scoreboard early and often on Saturday as they took an early 2-0 lead just 1:33 in to the first quarter. Seton Hill scored two more goals before the end of the first to take a 4-0 lead into the second. In the following 15 minutes of play, SHU exploded offensively with 8 goals. Dominican finally answered back with 2 goals in the quarter but the Griffins went into the half with a comfortable lead 10-2.
In the third quarter, Seton Hill kept their foot on the gas and found the back of the net on four more occassions. Dominican responded with two goals and SHU led by a score of 14-4 going into the final quarter of play. The Griffins put four more tallies on the board in the fourth and gained their first ECC conference victory of the season with a 20-7 win.
Although they have been stuck in Sullivan Gym for the early part of the season, overall, Seton Hill looked very sharp on the turf today. Senior Joel Zalesky was absurd as he went off for 11 points in the game, 6 of which were goals and 5 were assists. Joel really did a nice job of breaking down the Dominican defense today. Whether he was taking advantage of a 1-1 matchup or being a facilitator for his teammates, Joel made a significant impact for the Griffins. Fellow senior Justin Menefee had himself quite a day as well as he accounted for 6 total points which consisted of 3 goals and 3 assists. Freshman James Delaney also played well as he notched 2 goals and 3 assists, good for 5 points on the day. Fellow freshman Josh Holland and junior Dan Ruby were the final Griffins to score atleast 2 goals.
SHU led in every statistic as well. The Griffins outshot the Chargers 27-25 in the game and dominated faceoffs as they won 20 of the 23 total. Dominican started to get a little sloppy as they committed 16 penalties on the day. However, that did not cause the Griffins to get away from their fundamentals as SHU stayed discipline throughout the entire 60 minutes. In the win, Corey Struss was on top of his game as he registered 14 saves in 45 minutes of work. Corey made some key saves early when the game was still close.
