Griffins Defeat Mercy College 17-9

Men’s Lacrosse moved to 8-4 overall and 5-3 in ECC conference play after a convincing 17-9 victory over Mercy College on Saturday afternoon.

Seton Hill opened up in the first quarter on with two goals scored seconds apart by Jimmy Cogley assisted by Greg Chaples and Dylan Lefebrve assisted by Matt Delmonico to lead 2-0 before Mercy’s C.J. Fleming would cut the lead in half at the 5:57 mark. Seton Hill would add a goal by Lefebrve with 40 seconds remaining in the period to make the score 3-1 at the completion of one quarter.

In the second quarter the Griffins came out strong once again starting things off right with two unassisted goals from Lefebrve and Trevor Cyr to increase their lead 5-1. The Mavericks were able to put one in the back of the net at the 6:23 mark to make it a 5-2 game. The Griffins answered back with another two goals from Dylan Gelven and James Delaney both assisted by Kevin Cala. With one remaining in the half the Mavericks were able to score one more goal. The Griffins entered halftime with a 7-3 advantage.

The Griffins came out of the break strong as they scored seven of the eleven goals in the third quarter, three of which came off the stick of Matt Delmonico. The Griffins had a comfortable 14-7 lead entering the fourth and final quarter.

Marc Piche scored a goal for the Griffins aided by Lefebrve one minute into fourth period action to extend their advantage 15-7. The Mavericks retaliated with a goal at the 10:58 mark to trim the lead 15-8. However, the Mavericks would not be able to mount a comeback as the Griffins continued to carry the momentum scoring another two goals off the sticks of Cala and Cyr to make it a 17-8 contest with 6:55 remaining on the scoreboard. The Mavericks got lucky and slid one past the Griffin keeper at the 2:19 mark to give then one additional tally before the final buzzer sounded.

Seton Hill was led offensively by Lefebrve who scored 3 goals and earned 3 assists. Delmonico also earned a hat trick in the win. Dylan Gelven, Trevor Cyr, and Jimmy Cogley all added 2 goals. While Kevin Cala contributed 1 goal and 3 assists. Christopher Ilse made 16 saves in the net for the Griffins. Seton Hill will return to action on Wednesday when they play host to Ohio Valley University. Game time is set for 4:00PM
