| The Moccasins drop their home opener Wednesday at Bryant Stadium Deep South Conference rival Wingate 12-11. With the win, Wingate improves to 1-4 overall and 1-1 Deep South Conference, while the Mocs’ record drops to 1-3 overall and 1-1 in conference play. Seabrooke Carter put the Mocs on top early, scoring the first goal of the game with 12:59 left in the first quarter. Cam Holding scored his first of five goals on the night to put the Mocs ahead 2-0 at the 9:01 mark. Wingate responded with back-to-back goals from David Lee and Jackson Bunn, tying the game 2-2 with 7:03 left in the first. Jon Freda put the Mocs back on top 3-2 with 5:40 left in the opening period. Wingate Billy Mutton converted on a man-up opportunity to tie the game 3-3 after the first period. Wingate used three man-up goals in the second period to outscore the Mocs 4-1 in the second period, giving Wingate a 7-4 advantage at the half. The Moccasins scored five of the first six goals in the third quarter to give them a 9-8 lead. Brian Rossetti started the run with his first of two goals at the 12:54 mark. Wingate’s Taylor Womble tied the score 9-9 with 3:48 left in the quarter. Cam Holding gave the Mocs a one-goal advantage, 10-9, after scoring with 13:18 left in the game. Back-to-back goals by Wingate gave them an 11-10 advantage with 12:56 left. Mocs’ Corey Brown scored on a pass from Freda to tie the game at 11-11 with 8:16 remaining. Angus Derbyshire scored what would turn out to be the game winning goal with 7:09 left, giving Wingate the 12-11 lead. The Mocs had what appeared to be the game-tying goal, but it was waived off on a goalie interference call. Adam Ismaeil went 12-21 on face-offs and finished the game with 10 ground balls. Brown finished the game with one goal and two assist. The Moccasins return to action Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. at Bryant Stadium against #5 Merrimack University. |
