March 29, 2014
The Game Story:
Box Score Lafayette Hill, Pa. - (3/29/2014) In a meeting of two nationally-ranked East Coast Conference (ECC) teams, #15 Chestnut Hill College and #9 LIU Post University went to battle with each other and the elements. Intensity climbed with each tally as the senior attack Michael Melnychenko (St. Catharines, Ontario) first led the Griffins to a 6-2 halftime lead, before bringing having to bring all things during a hectic final minute that unfortunately left the contest in the Pioneers favor, 10-9. Chestnut Hill College (3-4, 2-2) controlled the first of two different halves. Each side scored a goal in the first quarter and LIU Post University (5-2, 4-1) took a 2-1 advantage at 13:25 of the second quarter, before Melnychenko scored unassisted and with a man-up before finding sophomore attack Michael Plaia (Hicksville, N.Y.) on the second of two goals in the Griffins 5-0 run to halftime, 6-2. Unfortunately, the second half went the Pioneers way as the visitors cut the lead in half by the end of the third quarter, 7-5, and led by two goals, 9-7, before the final whirlwind minute. Melnychenko found sophomore defenseman Derick Darnulc (Baldwin, N.Y.) at the minute-marker (1:00), 9-8, and scored himself to tie the game with 46 seconds left to play (0:46), 9-9, but the effort was all for not with senior defenseman T.J. McAndrew (Randolph, N.J.) locating sophomore attack Matty Beccaris (North Babylon, N.Y.) for the Pioneer game-winner just 13 seconds later, 10-9 (0:33). Beccaris scored twice and recovered two ground balls, but it was sophomore midfielder Anthony Berardis (Mahopac, N.Y.) who led the Pioneer offense with three goals and a ground ball. McAndrew added five ground balls and three caused turnovers to his assist while graduate goalkeeper T.J. DeCarlo (Farmingdale, N.Y.) recorded five saves and a ground ball in the win (5-2). Melnychenko finished with five points on three goals and two assists. He also recorded five ground balls and a caused turnover. Freshman attack Alec Dambach (Howell, N.J.) offered a goal, an assist, and a ground ball while freshman midfielder Joseph Pozniak (Berkeley Heights, N.J.) won 10-of-20 (.500) face-offs and recovered five ground balls. In goal, senior Joseph Donnelly (Newtown Square, Pa.) made 11 saves in the loss (3-4). The men's lacrosse team continues their ECC schedule at Dowling College for a 1:00 p.m. ECC contest on Saturday, April 5.
