|Lafayette Hill, PA – (5/5/2012) – In this afternoon's East Coast Conference (ECC) matchup, The Griffins high-powered offense allowed them to finish their regular season with a win. The Pioneers appeared to have all the momentum they needed going into the second quarter, but the Griffins went on the offensive and erased the single goal deficit. The Griffins were led by sophomore attack Mike Melnychenko (St. Catharines, Ontario) who scored four of the Griffins nine goals, and two ground balls. Five other Griffins assisted Malnychenko by scoring a goal a piece.|
Chestnut Hill College (8-6, 5-5) struck first in today's contest; an unassisted Melnychenko goal provided the Griffins with their first goal at 12:52 in the first quarter. C.W. Post (6-6, 4-6) was called for slashing with 7:23 remaining. The Griffins took advantage of their man-up opportunity and sophomore attack Kevin Sonderschafer (Warrington, PA) provided the Griffins with another goal with 7:02 remaining. In the final seconds of the first quarter the Pioneers were able to cut their goal deficit to one going into the second quarter. The Pioneers had the momentum going into the second quarter by scoring immediately at 14:45 and again at 14:07 to give them the lead 3-2. The Griffins regained their composure and struck back when junior attack Craig Owen (Glenolden, PA) scored with 9:36 remaining in the second quarter. Another penalty was called against the Pioneers to give the Griffins the opportunity they needed to seize the lead, Melynchenko provided the Griffins with the go-ahead goal with 5:02 remaining. After the halftime intermission the Griffins momentum did not diminish, with 11:55 left in the third quarter senior attack Kevin Festa (Auburn, NY) added on another goal. Only seconds later at 10:26, Malnychenko tacked on another goal for the Griffins giving them a 6-3 lead. The Pioneers Kevin Rodriguez (Cortlandt Manor,NY) responded quickly, and seconds after face off he cut the defcit to two with 10:07 remaining in the third quarter. At the start of the fourth period Chestnut Hill College was called for a slashing penalty to give C.W. Post the advantage. Even the C.W. Post advantage was not enough to stop the Griffins, as Melnychenko again responded with man-down goal 12:28 into the fourth quarter. The Pioneers responded with a goal with 8:22 remiaining in the game. Unfortunately for the pioneers the Griffins offense did not let up, with three more goals coming from sophomore midfielder Mike Landau (Lancaster, PA), junior midfielder Nate Tharp (Laytonsville, MD), and sophomore defenseman Alex Frederick (Landisville, PA). The Pioneers final push resulted in a goal 0:18 left to play, which was not enough. The Griffins finished the contest with a fianl score of 9-6.
The Pioneers' offensive effort was thanks to senior midfielder Keith Rodriguez provided the team with two goals, and two groundballs. Four other pioneers did assist Rodriguez with four more goals, but it was not enough to stop the Griffins powerful offense. In goal for the Pioneers was junior Tim Bradley (Wantagh, NY) who provided the pioneers with 15 save, but got the loss (6-6)
In goal for the Griffins, junior goalkeeper Dakota Maurer (Lititz, PA) provided the team with a strong defensive effort with 16 saves and pulled off the win (8-6).
Prior to todays contest, The Chestnut Hill Griffins took time to honor senior Kevin Festa for all of his hard work and dedication to Chestnut Hill athletics, and specifically the Men's Lacrosse Program. Festa finishes his senior season with 6 goals, and 13 groundballs. The Chestnut Hill College Griffins finish their season 8-6 overall, and 5-5 in the ECC.
