ROME – James VandenBrink scored five goals, Matt Kristiansen amassed seven total points and Kyle VanKauwenberg and Patrick Foy netted four goals each as Shorter's men's lacrosse team rolled to a 27-9 victory over visiting Alderson-Broaddus on Saturday at Ben Brady Field.
Shorter (2-2) won its second straight while setting a program record for goals in a game. Seven Hawks scored multiple goals in a strong team effort that saw Shorter assist on 19 of its 27 tallies.
Alderson-Broaddus (0-3) scored the first goal of the game, but quickly succumbed to Shorter's superior depth and talent as the Hawks essentially put the game away in the first half.
Following Jimmy McCleery's goal just 44 seconds into the game, the Hawks reeled off seven straight goals to take a commanding 7-1 lead with 1:35 left in the first quarter. Shorter then scored nine of the game's next 11 goals to take a 16-3 lead into halftime – VanKauwenberg and Vandenbrink scored three goals each for Shorter in the opening frame that saw seven different Hawks find the back of the net.
Shorter's lead ballooned to as much as 18 and never dipped below 11 the rest of the way.
In a game highlighted by Shorter's offense, the Hawks also controlled the game in all aspects.
The Hawks outshot the Battlers 57-33 and allowed just 11 Alderson-Broaddus shots in the first half. Shorter won the ground ball battle 51-42 and won 25 of 39 faceoffs.
Freshman goalie J.R. Willers stopped four shots before giving way to Michael Williams for the final eight minutes of the game.
VandenBrink's five goals were a game and career high. Kristiansen dished out five assists in addition to scoring two goals to spearhead Shorter offensively while Foy also added a pair of helpers. Zachery Dirkse chipped in with three goals for the victors.
Tyler Kristiansen handed out three assists as well for a Shorter squad that scored on six of its seven man up opportunities while holding Alderson-Broaddus scoreless on all five of its man up chances.
Thomas Moffat paced the Battlers with five goals, three of which came in the second half.
The Hawks return to action on Wednesday, March 6 when they travel to the midwest to take on Lindenwood (Mo.). Game time is set for 8 pm ET.
