| COLORADO SPRINGS, CO-Host Colorado College used a second half surge to defeat the Alfred University men’s lacrosse team 10-5, Wednesday evening, in Colorado Springs, CO. The Tigers outscored the Saxons 9-1, over the course the of the games final 34 plus minutes to claim the victory. With the loss AU falls to 1-2 overall, while Colorado College improves to 1-0. AU started out strong, building a 2-0 lead heading into the second quarter behind a pair of goals from junior midfielder Matt Zon (Buffalo, NY/Sweet Home) (five-of-12 on face-offs, five groundballs). Colorado College scored the first goal in the second quarter with Nick Aherns finding the back of the net with 13:40 left in the second quarter. AU tallied a pair of goals in a two-minute span to claim a 4-1 lead with 5:48 left in the first half. The Tigers would score three unanswered goals to make it a 4-4 game at intermission. Colorado College’s momentum carried over into the second half, scoring three (6 total) unanswered goals to claim a 7-4 lead with 2:08 left in the third quarter. Sophomore attackman Brett Carroll (Buffalo, NY/Bishop Timon-St. Jude) scored for the Saxons to head into the fourth quarter trailing 7-5. In the fourth quarter AU was unable to find an answer as the Tigers netted the games final three goals, en route to a 10-5 victory. Zon and Carroll each finished with two goals to pace the Saxons. Sophomore midfielder Derek Green (Pittsburgh, PA/The Kiski School) recorded two points on a goal and an assist and junior defenseman Eric Jelen (Nanuet, NY/Clarkstown South) picked up five groundballs. Freshman Cody O’Connor (Whitney Point, NY/Whitney Point) went the distance in goal for AU making a career-high 18 saves, while Zach Steedman made nine stops in goal for Colorado College (1-0). Henri Halle and Charles Curtis each netted two goals and dished out an assist to lead Colorado College and eight different players recorded a point for the Tigers. |
