ALFRED, NY - The Hartwick College men's lacrosse team opened its Empire 8
Conference schedule with a hard-fought 14-10 victory over Alfred University
on Saturday at Merrill Field.
Hartwick, which is currently ranked eighth by the United States
Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA), improved to 5-0 on the season
and 1-0 in conference play.
The Saxons (4-2, 0-1 Empire 8), ranked 19th by the USILA, controlled
the
ball well in the first half, but had limited scoring opportunities due to an
aggressive Hartwick defense, which was led by senior Brant Kasschau and
freshman Kyle DeVoe. Alfred held a 4-3 lead after the first quarter, but
the Hawks fought back to take a 7-6 lead at halftime.
Hartwick increased its lead to 10-8 after three quarters and controlled the
ball in the fourth quarter to deny Alfred's comeback attempt.
Senior Ethan Poole scored a game-high four goals, while senior
preseason
All-American Ross Pino, who leads the Empire 8 Conference in scoring,
tallied three goals and three assists for Hartwick. Midfielder Ryan
Hoffmeister had two goals and three assists and Ryan Maloney added three
goals. Senior tri-captain Bill Luzzi and Brett Raboy had one goal apiece
for the Hawks.
The Saxons received three goals and two assists from senior midfielder Bryan
Bacon. Junior midfielder Steve Douglas netted three goals and sophomore
attack Dylan Macro had two goals.
