| ALFRED, NY - The Alfred University men’s lacrosse team dropped a dramatic 10-9 decision, Saturday afternoon in both teams season finale. Hartwick scored four unanswered goals to open the contest, including a pair of goals from Harry Hughes. Sophomore midfielder Ben DeMarco (Jamestown, NY/Jamestown (Maris Hills)) got AU on the board with just 18 seconds left in the first quarter and trimmed the Hawks lead to 4-1 heading into the second quarter. In the second quarter is was all Alfred as the Saxons outscored the visitors 3-1, and held a 13-7 advantage in shots. At intermission the Hawks held a slim 5-4 advantage. The Hawks struck first in the second half increasing their lead to 6-4 with 13:56 remaining in the third quarter. Each team would notch 3 more goals in the quarter, setting the stage for a dramatic fourth quarter. The Hawks found the net first with 6:32 remaining in the contest to their lead to 10-7. AU answered Hartwick’s goal as freshman attackman Riley Kinnane (Little Compton, RI/Portsmouth Abbey) found the net off a feed from junior midfielder Matt Hodnik (Binghamton, NY/Binghamton). Sophomore attackman Brett Carroll (Buffalo, NY/Bishop Timon-St. Jude) brought the Saxons to within one (9-10) with 34 seconds left in the contest off a feed from senior midfielder Dave Malave (Wading River, NY/Shoreham-Wading River). The Saxons could not find the net on their final run down the field, as Kinnane hit the post with a final shot, and time expired. For the game, AU outshot Hartwick 34-31, while Hartwick held an advantage in groundballs (34-25). Senior attackman Stefan Dabkowski (Latham, NY/ Shaker (SUNY Delhi)) netted a game-high three goals and DeMarco tallied two goals to pace the Saxons (4-11, 1-6 Empire 8). Senior midfielder Brendan Murphy (Buffalo, NY/ Bishop Timon-St. Jude) had a goal and an assist and Malave finished with a pair of assists. Senior midfielder Jay Whyel (Markleysburg, PA/Mercersburg Academy) chipped in with a goal. Junior defenders Jake Spadoni (Webster, NY/Webster Schroder) and Eric Jelen (Nanuet, NY/Clarkstown South) each caused two turnovers, while picking up three and two groundballs respectively to lead the AU defense. Freshman netminder Cody O’Connor (Whitney Point, NY/Whitney Point) finished with nine saves in goal for AU. Hughes and Joe Shields each scored three goals and Jake Cooper dished out a game-high three assists to lead the Hawks (7-7, 2-4 Empire 8). Nick Traino made a game-best 10 saves in goal. |
