Alfred vs. Brockport

The Game Story:
ALFRED, NY – The Alfred University men’s lacrosse team lost to visiting Brockport, 11-10 in overtime, Saturday afternoon at Merrill Field, in the season opener for both teams.

Brockport’s Adam Drypolcher netted the unassisted game-winner with 2:17 left in overtime, as the Golden Eagles overcame a tying goal by Alfred junior attackman Marc Zoyhofski (Blasdell, NY/Frontier) with 33 seconds left in regulation. Drypolcher and Zoyhofski each finished the contest with four goals, and Zoyhofski added a pair of assists.

Brockport netted the game’s first goal, with Brad Cook scoring 1:44 in. After Zoyhofski tied it on an assist from junior midfielder Joe Gibbs (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro) with 9:57 left in the first, Brockport answered with a pair of goals to take a 3-1 lead four minutes into the second. The teams exchanged goals before AU sophomore attack Paul Eaton (Buffalo, NY/St. Francis) scored with 1:47 left in the second and Brockport led 4-3 at the half.

The visitors twice pushed their lead to three in the third period — 6-3 with 11:35 left and 7-4 with 10:58 left — before AU scored three unanswered to tie it at 7-7 on Zoyhofski’s third goal of the contest with three seconds left in the period. The Saxons took their first lead of the game with 9:12 left in the fourth on Eaton’s unassisted goal. Brockport then scored three straight to take a 10-8 lead with 2:37 left, but Eaton scored with 1:54 remaining to draw AU within one and Zoyhofski knotted it up 1:21 later.

The Saxons killed 58 seconds of a Brockport power play to start the overtime period and had one possession in Brockport’s end of the field, but could not get a scoring opportunity before Drypolcher won it for the Golden Eagles.

Brockport outshot AU, 48-28, and held advantages of 15-8 on faceoffs and 41-31 on groundballs.

Eaton had three goals, senior attack Mike Russo (Mattydale, NY/Cicero-North Syracuse) had a goal and an assist; and junior midfielders Adam Schultz (Geneva, NY/Geneva) and Kevin Kostyk (Islamorada, FL/Seneca, NJ) each had one. Freshman defender Jake Spadoni (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder) had a team-high six groundballs and four caused turnovers.

Matt Andon-McLane had two goals and an assist for Brockport and Brian Loeffler had six groundballs.

Freshman Tim Doyle (Macedon, NY/Palmyra-Macedon) made 21 saves in goal in his collegiate debut. Kyle Crosley stopped 11 shots in earning the win in net for Brockport.

Alfred is in action next on Wednesday, March 10, at noon against Misericordia in a game played in Myrtle Beach, SC.
