| ALFRED, NY – The Alfred University men’s lacrosse team defeated visiting Brockport, 8-7, Saturday afternoon in the Saxons’ 2009 home opener. AU (2-0) never trailed in a contest was close throughout. After the Saxons scored the game’s first three goals, Brockport (0-1) answered with a pair of its own and never trailed by more than two the rest of the way. AU sophomore attack Mark Zoyhofski (Blasdell, NY/Frontier) netted three goals to go with an assist to pace the AU offense. Freshman attack Drew Belica (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) had a goal and two assists and senior long-stick midfielder Evander Wilson (Penfield, NY/Penfield) had an assist to go with his game-high nine groundballs. The teams were evenly matched, as AU held only a slight advantage in shots (25-24) and groundballs (38-34). The visitors held a 12-7 edge in faceoffs, as Brockport’s Kyle Burton (Buffalo, NY/Amherst) won 11 of his 17 draws while picking up a team-best eight groundballs. Junior attack Justin Gill (Gowanda, NY/Gowanda), sophomore midfielder Justin Kieffer (Middletown, MD/Middletown), and freshman midfielders Dave Malave (Shoreham, NY/Shoreham-Wading River) and Brendan Murphy (Buffalo, NY/Bishop Timon-St. Jude) each netted a goal for AU. Sophomore attackmen Matt Andon-McLane (Syracuse, NY/Nottingham) and Mike McSweeney (Marcellus, NY/Marcellus) each had three goals for Brockport, while senior midfielder Joe Gomez (Amherst, NY/Amherst) dished out three assists. Sophomore Adam Schutz (Geneva, NY/Geneva) made nine saves in goal for Alfred, while Brockport senior goalie Garret Allwes (Amherst, NY/Amherst) stopped 10 shots. Alfred embarks on a two-game trip South next week, playing at Suwanee (TN) University at 4 p.m. Monday, March 9, and at Birmingham (AL) Southern University at 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 11. Brockport is in action next on Saturday, March 21, at 1 p.m. at St. John Fisher. |
