The Game Story:
CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – The Manhattanville men's lacrosse team clinched their first-ever Freedom Conference victory on Wednesday afternoon, defeating DeSales by the score of 12-6. Freshman Corey Steimel (Wyckoff, N.J./Ramapo) led the Valiants with four goals and a pair of assists for six points.

Both teams started out of the gate slowly with each team having an extensive offensive possession, the first saw the Valiants take eight shots while DeSales pulled the trigger on four shots. Steimel came close to scoring the game's first goal when he hit the post, but less than a minute later Steimel got the ball back and sent it to the back of the Bulldog net to put Manhattanville up 1-0.

Within the next minute of game time Steimel had his second goal after taking a pass from sophomore Brendan Kuntz (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood) to go up by a 2-0 score. Steimel struck once again for the natural hat trick with 1:24 to go in the first after taking a pass from junior Bill Motherway (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park). For Motherway it was his second helper of the quarter.

In the second quarter ,junior Justin Figueroa (Ardsley, N.Y./Ardsley) tallied his third goal of the season after senior Joe Daly (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) had his shot saved by Bulldog goalkeeper Jake Ross to put Manhattanville up 4-0. The next momentum shift swung in the favor of DeSales, as after killing off a man-down situation the Bulldogs got the ball back and scored their first of the afternoon to trim the lead to 4-1.

Since the Bulldog offense was struggling to get things going, Ross decided to take matters into his own hands and sprinted the length of the field after making a save to score and cut the lead in half. Kuntz got in on the goal action with one of his own after picking up an assist earlier in the game, before Steimel netted his fourth of the contest to put Manhattanville up at halftime 6-2.

For Steimel it was his 20th goal of the season, making him only the second player since 2008 to reach the 20-goal plateau and the first since Matt Corey scored 21 times back in 2010.

After the halftime break Kuntz scored his second goal of the game, while Motherway picked up his third assist of the contest at the 10:25 mark to put Mahattanville up by five. A few minutes later, Daly scored his first of the game on a great individual effort, as he ran down the DeSales player looking for a clear, used a solid stick check, scooped up the ground ball and went right onto goal to score.

Junior Will Sahakian (Natick, Mass./Rivers School) scored the next two goals of the game, beginning when he received a short pass from the top of the crease from Steimel. The next goal came after he picked up a long home-run type pass from the midfield line and shot from a few yards out to put Manhattanville up 10-2. DeSales scored once in the final 90 seconds to make it 10-3, heading into the fourth quarter.

DeSales scored 48 seconds into the fourth quarter and then scored five minutes later to cut the Valiants lead back in half at 10-5. Freshman Garrett Namian (Cincinnati, Ohio/Lakota East) scored his first career goal with 8:01 left in regulation, followed by classmate Connor Castleman (Kingwood, Texas/Kingwood) scoring his 10th of year to give the Valiants their largest lead of the game at seven.

The Bulldogs scored once more in the contest to cap off the scoring on the afternoon as Manhattanville earned their first-ever Freedom Conference victory. In goal junior Dom Poletto (Engelwood, Colo./Regis Jesuit) earned his third win of the season, making 12 stops and allowing six DeSales goals. Ross took the loss for the home team, making eight saves and yielding 12 goals, while scoring his first goal of the year as well.

Manhattanville (3-11, 1-3 Freedom) will play next against the King's (Pa.) Monarchs on Saturday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. for Senior Day. DeSales (6-8, 0-4 Freedom) was previously eliminated from the playoff picture and will play the final game of the season at FDU-Florham on Saturday at 2 p.m.
