Amherst vs. Bates

The Game Story:
AMHERST, Mass. -- The Bates College men's lacrosse team rallied from a 7-3 deficit, but the comeback ran out of time in a 7-6 loss to Amherst College at the University of Massachusetts' Garber Field on Saturday.


With its first loss, Bates falls to 2-1 overall and is now 0-1 in NESCAC play. The Lord Jeffs moved to 2-2, 1-0 in the NESCAC.

Senior co-captain Matt Erisman (Nantucket, Mass.), junior Justin Simon (Canaan, N.H.) and sophomore Sam Geller (Berkeley, Calif.) each scored two goals for Bates, with Erisman adding in two assists and Geller notching one helper.

Simon got Bates on the board first with 6:49 left in the first period on an Erisman assist, but Amherst went on a 4-0 run and kept the lead for good. Thomas McDonnell scored two of his game-high three goals in the streak, which culminated in a Will Ferrer goal two minutes into the second period.

Geller broke the run off an assist by sophomore Sean O'Brien (Ballston Lake, N.Y.).

Amherst increased its 6-3 halftime lead to 7-3 49 seconds into the third quarter on McDonnell's third goal.

Bates held the Jeffs scoreless for the final 29 minutes and 11 seconds of the game; meanwhile, Erisman made it 7-4 on a Geller assist just before the fourth quarter. The Bobcats scored twice in the final minute -- Geller unassisted at the 14:00 mark and Simon from Erisman with 29 seconds to play. Amherst goalie Matt Petroforte, who was credited with 25 saves, made a save with 10 seconds left in the game and the Jeffs held on for the win.

Bates plays host to the University of Southern Maine Monday at 4 p.m.
