April 21, 2007
The Game Story:
AMHERST, MA – The Amherst College men’s lacrosse team picked up a crucial NESCAC win over Bowdoin College this afternoon, 14-2. Senior tri-captain Derek Cherney (Chappaqua, NY) netted three goals and tallied two assists in the win, while first-year attacker John-Thomas Milone (Manhasset, NY) grabbed two goals and an assist.

The Lord Jeffs started out the first period on fire, with Cherney having a hand in three of the first four goals scored by the Jeffs. Amherst continued their domination through the second half, scoring 12 unanswered goals and holding the Polar Bears scoreless until the 8:54 mark of the fourth period.

In a well-balanced effort from the Lord Jeffs, 14 players tallied either a goal or an assist with first-years Matt Kellman (Wilton, CT) and Thomas McDonnell (Manhasset, NY) along with sophomore attacker Brett Miller (Wantagh, NY) tallying one goal and two assists apiece.

Bowdoin’s only scores of the game come later in the fourth period when Adam Tracy found the back of the net with an unassisted tally. Tracy’s score was followed by a goal from Alex Weaver, which was assisted by Matt Chadwick.

Sophomore goaltender Matt Pietroforte (Brooklyn, NY) played an outstanding game in net for the Lord Jeffs, allowing only one goal while stopping eight shots. With Bowdoin scoring only one goal against the sophomore netminder, Pietroforte allowed the least number of goals in one game during his career as a Jeff.

Amherst returns to action Tuesday, April 24 versus Tufts University for another critical NESCAC match-up.
