|The Game Story:|
|FARMINGDALE, NY – The Amherst College men’s lacrosse team played against NESCAC rival Connecticut College this afternoon at SUNY-Farmingdale on Long Island, N.Y. as part of a two-day trip to the area where many of the Lord Jeff players hail from. Amherst pulled out a 9-8 come-from-behind win for their third straight victory.|
Amherst ended the first period with a 3-2 lead, picking up goals in the frame from first-year Alex Fox (Garden City, NY), sophomore Matt Rawson (Bethesda, MD) and junior J.T. Milone (Manhasset, NY). The Camels got one of their two goals in the period from Steve Dachille, who finished the day with a team-high four scores.
The second quarter saw Conn College quickly grab a 4-3 lead as Ben Eischen and Dachille scored a pair of goals in the first five minutes of the frame. With 8:09 to play in the quarter, Amherst tied the game when senior Brett Miller (Wantagh, NY) assisted on a goal by classmate Tim Thornton (Garden City, NY).
The Camels regained the lead minutes less than two minutes later when Ryan Hayes beat Amherst senior goalie Matt Pietroforte (Brooklyn, NY) off a feed from Mark Mangano. Amherst’s Miller picked up his second helper on a late goal by Tom McDonnell (Manhasset, NY) to tie the game 5-5 heading into the half.
In the third quarter, Eischen scored two and a half minutes into the period to put Conn back on top, only to see Milone finish off another Miller assist to equalize. Neither team scored in the final 8:49 of the third quarter, leaving the fourth and final quarter to decide the game.
Dachille scored a pair of goals in the first 5:01 of the fourth quarter to give Conn an 8-6 lead, and put the Camels in good position to steal the victory. McDonnell responded for Amherst, scoring a trio of goals, including the game-winner, down the stretch to power the Lord Jeffs to a 9-8 win.
McDonnell’s game-winner came with just 1:44 to play, off an assist from Fox. Amherst junior Matt Kellman (Wilton, CT) was crucial to Amherst’s comeback, going 2-for-2 on face-offs in the final quarter. Kellman was 9-for-12 on face-offs for the day.
McDonnell finished the game with four goals to match Dachille’s day, while Miller had three assists for Amherst. Pietroforte finished with 17 saves in net for the Jeffs, while Rob Moccia made 14 stops for the Camels.
With the victory, Amherst improves to 3-1 on the year and picks up its first conference win to move to 1-1 in NESCAC play. Conn drops to 2-3 (0-2 NESCAC) with the result. Amherst will face Bowdoin on the road on Saturday, while Conn will head to Middlebury.
