|MIDDLEBURY, VT - The third-seeded Amherst College men’s lacrosse team fell to fourth-seeded Wesleyan University 13-9 in the NESCAC Tournament semifinals, hosted by Middlebury College on Saturday. Sophomore Chris Hofmann (New Canaan, CT) posted three goals and two assists and classmate Derek Cherney (Chappaqua, NY) tallied a pair of goals and two assists as the Jeffs conclude their season at 11-4.|
Hofmann and rookie Will Ferrer (Greenwich, CT) each netted a goal in the opening five minutes to give Amherst an early 2-0 edge. Wesleyan rallied with five straight scores, including a pair by junior Glenn Adams, to build a 5-2 lead of its own with 11:04 remaining in the second quarter. The Jeffs battled back as Ferrer tallied an unassisted man-up goal at the 6:04-mark, Cherney converted a feed from Hofmann just over a minute later and senior Alex Casertano (Millbrook, NY) and Hofmann posted back-to-back goals just seven seconds apart to give Amherst a 6-5 advantage with 3:29 left before halftime. The lead, however, would be short-lived as Wesleyan senior Chris Knacke netted an unassisted tally in the closing minutes to knot the count at the break.
The two squads traded goals in the opening ticks of the third frame. Ferrer scored his third goal of the day, finding the net off a dish from Cherney, and Cardinal senior Chris Meade answered just under two minutes later to even it up. Hofmann put the Jeffs back on top, 8-7, but three straight Wesleyan goals would give the Cardinals the lead for good. Cherney pulled Amherst within one, 10-9, with 1:31 remaining in the third, but the Jeffs could not find the cage again, while Wesleyan tacked on three more scores in the final session to seal the win.
Amherst senior goalie Cushing Donelan (Noroton, CT) collected seven saves and five ground balls in defeat, while sophomore Charlie Congleton made 14 stops for the Cardinals, who advance to face top-seeded Middlebury in tomorrow’s NESCAC Championship game.
