|BABSON PARK, Mass. -- First-year Jason Wellemeyer (Pembroke, Mass.) scored three goals and senior co-captain Dave Frascogna (Orchard Park, N.Y.) stopped 16 shots in net to lead the Babson College men’s lacrosse team to a 4-3 victory over visiting Eastern Connecticut State University in a non-conference game on Thursday afternoon.|
Babson (3-2) tallied a pair of goals midway through the first quarter, as senior Nick Corto (Orchard Park, N.Y.) scored at 9:54 and Wellemeyer converted an assist from senior co-captain Jared Connell (Yarmouth, Maine) at 8:47. The Beavers retained the 2-0 lead until the second quarter, when Eastern Connecticut State (2-2) tied the contest with goals by sophomore Chris Elrod (Riverside, Conn.) at 10:41 and senior Brian Hebron (Hicksville, N.Y.) at 8:16.
Wellemeyer gave Babson the lead for good with 4:38 remaining in the third, as he converted a feed from senior Steve Whitney (Hudson, Mass.) to give the Beavers a 3-2 advantage. Wellemeyer then made it 4-2 when he scored off an assist from junior Jonathan Wyeth (New London, N.H.) with 4:52 left in the fourth. That would prove to be enough for Frascogna and the Babson defense, which shut down the Warriors’ offense for the majority of the second half. ECSU got a goal from first-year Josh Cittadino (Baldwin, N.Y.) with 4.1 seconds remaining in regulation, but the Warriors were unable to gain control after the ensuing faceoff as the Beavers held on for the 4-3 victory.
Both goalies were magnificent in the contest. Frascogna made a season-high 16 saves in net, including five in the fourth quarter, while ECSU junior Will Holland (Kent, Conn.) turned away a total of 12 shots.
