| WELLESLEY, MASS. -- Junior goalkeeper Paul DeFina (Concord, Mass.) made a career-high 25 saves in
net to fend off a late UMass-Boston comeback attempt and lead the Babson College men?s lacrosse team to a
13-12 victory over the Beacons on Saturday afternoon.
Babson (4-2) held an 8-3 lead at the half, thanks to two second-quarter goals by sophomore Tim Armenta (Kennebunk, Maine). However, UMass-Boston (1-2) came storming back in the third quarter, scoring six straight goals to take a 9-8 advantage. Junior Phil Pittorino (Acton, Mass.) scored two goals and assisted another during the run. The Beavers finally halted the Beacons? momentum at the end of the third, as first-year Nick Corto (Orchard Park, N.Y.) scored on a one-hop shot from 15 yards out, tying the game at 9-9. Babson then scored two quick goals in the fourth period, including Armenta?s third of the game, to retake the lead, 11-9. After the two teams traded goals, Hasen struck for what would turn out to be the game-winner with 8:03 remaining, as he gave the Beavers a 13-10 advantage. UMass-Boston junior Joshua Stolp (Hingham, Mass.) then scored his sixth goal of the contest with just under seven minutes left to make it 13-11, and sophomore Mike Forns (Falmouth, Mass.) added another off an assist from Stolp with :54 seconds remaining, making it a one goal game. However, the Babson defense halted a final UMB charge as the final seconds expired, sealing the 13-12 victory. DeFina was spectacular in net for the Beavers, making 14 of his career-best 25 saves in the second half. Junior Jonny Walker (Sharon, Mass.) stopped 16 shots in 58 minutes for the Beacons. |
